Default vibration under load- F23 5spd

2001 EX coupe, F23A1 manual trans.

trouble started a few weeks ago. getting on the interstate or during "spirited" acceleration the front end would shake. once cruising it disappears. it only happens under load/acceleration. it has progressively gotten worse.

i've had several ideas... i ruled out brakes, i ruled out tires/wheels, had it aligned in Dec. so that's out, engine mounts are all fine..

so i'm looking now at axles being the source of the vibration. i crawled under the car last night and felt the play in the axles. it didn't seem extreme but all the service manual says is to "check for excessive axle play." how much is excessive?

i've only ever replaced axles because of clicking, clunking, total failure or split boots. none of those apply in this case. 150k miles on the car. pretty sure they're original axles.

any insight would be helpful.

What kind of vibration is it? Does it hum with the engine speed or along with the tire speed? Try decelerating in gear from speed while barely keeping your feet on the gas and clutch pedals and see if you feel the vibration then. Any modifications?

it's the same type of vibration that might be felt if both front wheels were unbalanced, but it only happens when the engine is under load / when accelerating. there's no vibration when braking on the engine (decel. in gear), the only speed related change is that above 75mph everything is fine; no vibration under any load.

it's essentially stock, just a SRI.

late update: replaced passenger side CV assembly and the severity of the vibration was reduced but not eliminated. i then replaced the driver's side assembly (outer section w/ the joints. still has original half shaft that mounts to the engine block.) and the vibration is completely gone :D.

i pulled the inner joints apart today to inspect them. the driver's side had some very noticeable wear and pitting in the grooves. the passenger's side had wear but no pitting. if i can get good enough pics of the damage i'll try to get them posted up for reference.

Mine turned out to be the balancer shafts slightly out of time. My whole steering wheel would shake like made from 65-70mph. If you was in the other car next to me, you'd probably see my steering wheel shakes. Lol. Been like this for 2-3 years of driving it. And finally figured it's the balancer shafts that's the culprit.

^ Weird.. I ran a summer without the balancer shaft belt, my engine mounts are filled, and there was a definite "buzz" in the steering wheel, especially around certain RPM areas (vibration, but nothing like un-balanced tires for example)

You made the right move. Vibration under acceleration is a tale tell sign of bad inner cv joints.

Had this same issue. Turned out to be bad axles from Auto zone. I swapped them out twice.Their axle's are okay for auto's but not 5-speeds. I ended up getting axle's from Raxle. There is a lot of threads on this. here is one: https://honda-tech.com/forums/showth...t=axle+vibrate
