Default New ground effects kit

This may be a slow going project. I'm working on this in between my engine bay shave and wire tuck. I bought this car knowing that it needed body work because things were starting to crack and the handle shaves were popping. I had no idea how extensive the Bondo work was until today. I started picking at the rear fender and got a big surprise.

The door jam was built up like crazy and the hole they cut to make the side vents fit looks like they used an angry beaver, so I cleaned it up in order to weld a new plate in.

The Bondo was 5/8 in thick in some places. Who does that? Especially with BONDO!! This is going to be a fun project.

If people are going to put that much time into sculpting bondo, why not lay some glass and do it right?

I'll be welding in a new plate for that. It was open straight into the car the whole time. No wonder I would get wet carpet when I drove in the rain.

Got more ripped off today. Now I'm able to take off the fenders because they were blended in which is a huge help for my wire tuck.

I'm already sick of grinding off bondo. I got the rest of the drivers door cleaned off today and it was a mess. Halfway up the door, no where near the blend of the kit, there was still a ton. And they filled alot of space in the handle shave too. I shot it with some etching primer to keep it from rusting before I get to work on it. I will have some filling to do of my own but no where near what they did and no Bondo.

I also started investigating why the doors, when closed, were 3/8 of an inch further out than the body. I thought that it may have to do with the popper mounts but no. All it took was a phillips and 15 seconds. The door latch post had to come in. Why wouldn't you take the time to do that? Is fitment of no concern to people?

Looks like a good project.
Are going to reuse the doors and keep the shaved handle?

Thanks man. It's my first time doing anything like this but I have common sense, so that helps.

I'll reuse the door but I'm going to weld in another plate so that it is metal and not bondo in there. I'll obviously have to use some filler myself because of the dents but it won't be Bondo and it'll be a 1/16in at the worst point.

My hatch had about a brick sized chunk of bondo on each side in the back of the rocker panels. It was done by the dealership before I bought it. It looked good for a year before the rust came back with a vengeance.

Why do people want holes in their car? Its looks like a cheese grater on wheels!

Good stuff, I actually went through nearly exactly the same thing with my hatch. Difference is, I put the body kit stuff on myself and cut my quarters the same way too. It was easy to remove since I knew ahead of time where I put all the self tap screws and what not. If you want a link, I can send it to you. I know seeing someone else's work gets me motivated.

It looks like they had to cut the holes in order to get the side vents to fit with any amount of depth. Why they didn't make a backing plate or something, I don't know.
