Icon6 91 civic 4door build

ahhhh my new ride
1991 Honda civic LX

so bought the car had a blowing out head gasket....
drove it for a few weeks to get the money to buy a head kit...

and the trouble began!!!!

BLOWN HEAD GASKET
tear down and rebuild
(order/buy a complete top end gasket set)
NOT from JIS ENGINES
905 Arlington TX 76010

step1
park car on ramps. and jack up rear and put on jack stands
make it level or tilted slightly to front

step2
remove hood or plan on hitting it many times with your head!

step3
drain oil and antifreeze.

step4
unbolt manifold you will need penetrating oil WD40 and a breaker bar!
you may destroy some bolts try not to, but keep peaces for local hardware store.
be very careful with the engine studs!!!! they brake really easy lots of penetrating oil

step5
remove intake.... take a picture of were all hoses ect. go this will help later!
don't forget the brace that holds intake to motor. on underside in back
take manifold and intake set aside in safe place...
i used like 100g Rubbermaid container with old towels in bottom

step6
unplug all sensors the go to head again take picture and be careful wires maybe rotted and brake easily... lots of pictures better to have 50 unused pictures then 1 picture u need and don't have

step7
remove the valve cover....
4 nuts easy cheesy
set it in safe place!

step8
remove all 10 head bolts!
place in 2 litter bottle
then inside safe place

step9
remove all water hoses
put them in safe place
don't forget pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!

step10
remove upper timing belt cover and timing belt
like 3 bolts
timing belt should be able to slip off by hand mine was.
also mine was replaced 2 week b4 might want to invest in water pump/timing belt

step11
OK now the back braking part!
remove the head from the engine
easier said then done
i took long metal bar and chain to do it.
hook chain to head studs
slide metal bar/prying tool in chain
set pry tool on safe spot in engine bay and pry up
if this didn't work invest in cherry picker to pry it up or a 2nd set of hands

step12
lay out of work cause u tweaked a back muscle working on car!

the real step 12
peal/scrape gasket of head and Block!

step13
peel/scrape gasket residue of intake/manifold

*note this is a good time to preform your own port and polish if u know what your doing!*

step14
take head to machine shop to have it check
20-50$ should be most u pay unless its bad head!

step 15
wait 7 days for

JIS Engine, LP
95 East Abram St.
Arlington, TX 76010

to send you wrong parts!!!!
the call and have them send you the right parts
but no they wont fix there mistake and over night the parts
these people are **** to deal with i discourage any deals with them.

needless to say to get everything i ordered in first place took me over a month... not once did they overnight a part or admit to being wrong..

step 16
if everything works out place gasket on bock
set head to top dead center if it isn't still there

step 17
place head on top of block and start a head stud or two to get it set on right.

step 18
get torque wrench and torque it to specs.... i think i looked it up here when i did it....

step 19
place valve cover gasket in valve cover use some RVT gasket maker to seal it up well... use on spark plug well gaskets too

step 20
put all timing belt covers on

step 21
place valve cover on head
torque down to specs...

step 22
here is were the pics come in handy
put intake and exhaust manifolds back on
replug in everything

step 24
fill with water/oil
check all connections

step 25
put on timing belt
i forgot to put on the covers!!!!!
to late now ill add that as a step

step 26
recheck everything then try to start it
haynes manuals are worth there weight in gold fyi

mine came out fine if i missed a step or messed this up please say so ill try to edit it to correct it!

i/h/e = Intake / header / exhaust. Usually relating to having replaced these items with aftermarket products.

please do not put those rims on your car.... sometimes its ok to leave the steelies on there and stop spray painting stuff weird colors trust me your not tricking anyone into thinking those parts are anything but stock.... so no more spray painting and no more misc chrome vw rims going onto your car.

i thought they looked like Chevy mags too!!!! sorry but im a big chevy fan just cant afford the 8-13 mpg that comes with the V8s... this is my 1st honda! dont plan on ricing it up with big spoiler or body kit! want to...

1.) fix the rings making it smoke when i rev it up
2.) get front fender fixed!
3.) kill the rust on passenger rear wheel well
4.) paint body/engine bay black (cheap black not pearl or metallic flake)
might go white, white looks good but a cheap white yet again!
5.) new carpet and passenger seat reupholstered
6.) get 4 matching rims and tires prefer the Honda 5or6 spoke aluminum rims
see them on accords a lot. but i like these ones too and unless i cant
get rust off or they look like **** on the car im going use them. might even
sand them down to take chrome off and go black or rustolium gray
one i want are in pic below
7.) also want to add intake but other then that leaving motor alone i like
35-40 mpg i can go to beach and hang out all week and come back for
40$ total!!!!! i love that! costs my dad 50 each way not to mention if he
drives while there.

Keep the original paint. I've never seen a cheap black sedan look even half decent.

HOW OLD ARE YOU?!

nice job on the head gasket. hope you didn;t use one of the cheap egay ones... youll understand soon enough, cheap gaskets last 1/4th as long as oem.

i rebuilt my sohc and had to go over each egay gasket 1 by 1 and replace them with oem ones within the first month of breaking the motor in.
