Default Sheared cam gear

Anyone ever have the keyway on the factory cam gear shear clean off? I finally got my old 94 coupe that I sold to my friend up and going. Ported and flowed head, oversized valves, zex cam, and what happens? Keyway on the cam gear shears off and the pistons eat the valves. WTF are the odds of this? Somewhere along the lines of 1 in a million?

It would be a tough call on that. When I was diagnosing what happened and installed a fresh cam gear, the valvetrain would only allow a Lil bit of play. Cam looks good, no scorings or discolorations. Just trying to understand how and what with this, just bad luck?

D series? Or B series?
Only time I ever had a problem is when i put an aftermarket crank pulley on. There was just a very small amout of play which was greatly increased eventually "rolling" the key and ruining the crank...

Only thing I can suggest is make sure there is virtually zero play with the gear/keyway and camshaft...
