Best Engine Swap ?
In an earlier post, I learned my D15B2 engine is not compatible with B16 heads, and visa versa. And, I also learned that a B-series block won't fit in my D-series compartment without major modifications. So, now I have the question; which engines & parts ARE compatible with each other ? Bottom-line is that I may want to do an engine swap in my 91 Civic DX Hatchback. What engines can I put in WITHOUT major modifications (minor mods ok...just don't want to break out the plasma cutter and have to cut-n-paste stuff). In other words, can a D16Z7 engine out of a 96 Civic EX bolt-in to my 91 Civic DX with min mods ? Both are SOHC, 4-valve engines...?
Thanks
Thanks
I've been looking into the same sort of swap for my HF, looking for a D series out of a newer model civic 92-00. I know all D series stuff is interchangable so the mounts would be the same, transmissions would all fit, intake manifolds etc. The only real differences are in electronics like the harnesses, sensors and the dizzy. To have it run you need the ecu and engine to be the same obd. I heard it's easier to just convert the engine to obd0 by using your original ecu and dizzy. Also you'd have to use an obd0 intake manifold from a HF or SI because it uses hoses instead of sensors for...stuff. Again i've never done this swap this is just the info I've read and remember. Anyway I'm in for answers.
Dont throw away the idea of a B-series swap just because you may have heard "major modification" to do it. A B-series will require different mounts and to get it to bolt. Your "major modification" will be the use of a big hammer on your frame rail so that your alternator will clear.
But if your are set on a D-series, then any D series will bolt in without aftermarket mounts. Hell even if you just wanted little more out of your D15b2, swap the intake manifold for a mpfi. (going to have to be done with any decision you make anyways).

Wow...thanks jrose152 and Mike17. Others made it seem like it was going to be a bit more difficult. I'm just exploring all my options. I have about $1,200 to spend, and there is so much out there it gets confusing on which way to go. Sounds like my best bet is to rebuild the engine I have, and add a header and exhaust, high-flow intake / filter, and a MPFI system. What would you estimate the HP boost to be with engine size (no bore-out) and these mods ? I think stock HP is around 92 or so. I'm guessing about 5-7 HP for the intake, 15 HP for the exhuast, and another 10-12 for the MPFI. Maybe 125 HP for the lot huh ? Sounds like KillerHippy is lokking for the same type of boost...
Thanks again...

There are only a few things, IMO, that are bad with going B series...
-Aftermarket motor mounts, at least $200 depending on manufacturer.
-Finding a transmission if it didnt come with your motor. It will cost you if you want a b16 tranny, which is the best, ratio wise(acceleration).
-The shift linkage, either has to be aftermarket, OEM siR(good luck), or cut/welded DA linkage.

i run the jdm b16 and it pretty much bolted right into my 91 hatch just a minor clearance mod for the alternator besides that goes right in tho, and is in my opinion the best bang for your buck!
A B series swap ina EF isnt that hard bud all u really gotta do to make it fit is and heres the fun part HIT UR CAR WITH A SLEDGE HAMMER!!! lol You seriously do u gotta bang back part of the Frame for the Altenator to fit and tahts about it...and Maybe if u wanna space the hood alittle or the engine will hit It.... If not its no big deal all that will happin is ull eventually get a dent in ur hood... But that also depends on what motor mounts u use... some make car sit high some make sit low

with the newer motor and tranny u have to do a hydro to cable conv. or get the hasport one or you can use your tranny or find an si one. but i would put a b motor is for sure cause u throw another d in the you are just going to want more power later on and end up doing it all over agian.. not much mod for a b motor.. just bang out the frame rail for the alt. pulley to clear
