Default What would make a good, fairly thin, flexible thermal barrier (in ~1' X 1' sheets)?

I was thinking of heater pipe wrap from Home Depot or some place like that?

Any other ideas?

Aluminum sheeting would be my first choice.

Difficult to say without knowing the intended purpose.

Not ITR related, but I want to put a thermal barrier between the intake manifold and the valve cover on my VR6, since the intake mani on the VR6 goes over top of the valve cover.

Ah, yes, I know what you're talking about.

You might want something more substantial than the foam heater pipe wrap. I'd be afraid of it melting into goo between the valve cover and the IM.

Good point, but I thought that stuff was good up to and above 100 degrees C?

Anything else I could use? Exhaust wrap might work, but I have to cover a pretty big area.

Carbon fibre is set in resin - flammable and will melt.

How much space is there between them?

It may be that the best thing would be to not put anything there at all. Trying to insulate it may actually accelerate heat transfer. If there is sufficient space between them the air in that space may help keep things cool.

There isn't too much space, but I'll check it and report back to you later.

There is about 1/2" at the tightest spot and the rest has about 3/4" clearance between the valve cover and IM. Might be too thin to put a barrier like pipe wrap in there.

Maybe I should just get a home ceramic coating kit and coat the valve cover and the under-belly of the IM.

I think that would be safer than foam insulation.

Good luck.
