Default b16 intake manifold vs type r manifold

Which is better to run on my b16a2 with i/h/e and type r cams. A b16 intake manifold or a type r intake manifold with a ported b16 throttle body.

The reason I ask is because I've seen threads on people saying the type r intake manifold is no good on b16s

Intake air bypass. It is on GSR manifolds, not ITR. You don't have to worry about that.

there have been many dynos showing that b16 intake manifold outperforms pretty much all manifolds till 7800-8000rpm, above that itr or blox etc will outperform so it really depends on your priorities. I spend much more time below 7500rpm so I plan to just keep the b16 im since that is where I spend 99% of my time and I'm not willing to take 5-10hp out of the middle/low and put it at the very top end which is what would occur if I changed it. I actually have an itr manifold sitting here so its not like cost is really a factor for me anyway.

Great topic to bring up for those who don't know!

The deal is, that it's true, the stock B16 manifold- 2nd gen that is, known as the P30 performs very very well! With the slightly longer, narrower intake runners, air really pickys up a lot of velocity on stock and mild built engines.

The P73 ITR manifold has shorter, wider runners which actually make 2-4hp "less" than the P30 up until about 7000rpm where the ITR manifold design shows it's colors

I've seen dyno's of built B20 vtec covnersions with both manifolds used, same result!!

For most people, really anybody who uses their car on the street, the P30 is a better choice. it should also be noted that i have seen the P30 manifold ported with even better performance of another 4-6whp across the rpm range.

The last thing i have to mention is that from dyno testing i've seen done, the P30 outperformed most aftermarket designs as well!

I can't say, as i haven't seen them 1 on 1, but i would bet they would be pretty close. I am confident, that if you took a stock P30 and spent your money on a good port job through a company like exrude hone, you'd make more power than the Skunk part

my recommendation is to get some steel wool and clean up the b16 manifold and spend your 200 somewhere else. its not worth it IMO.

for your guy's reference p30 on the right and skunk2 on the left.

This is probably a stupid question but how can you tell if you have a P30 intake manifold?

It will be stamped on the back

1st gen manifold is a PR3 and looks older with extra emission pods on it

2nd gen came out in 1992 (P30) newer style, no sticker on top

man, great info here. I was thinking about buying a skunk2 intake manifold or something for my LS/Vtec turbo.

How do you all think the p30 intake manifold would do on the LS/Vtec with a nice port job done on it?

old thread i know, but i have the opportunity to trade my b16 manifold for a type r manifold and am crossed on if i should pull the trigger. i dd my car, but plan to get in a good amount of track time both drag and circuit and have cams on the way, which would be best? im assuming type r for the higher rpm's on the track, but b16 for the dd aspect...

btw the trade is straight up

^^ great way to loose power on a B16.

Sorry, but a P30 manifold is faster making more power for like 6000rpm, as compared to an iTR which has a little 1500rpm spike at high rpm....think about it!

Is there any dyno evidence to add to this thread?

I've got a Gen2 B16A with Type R cams and i've run many back to back tests at the drag and i lost .2 second and 4kph on my trap speed going from a CTR intake manifold back to the factory Gen2 B16A intake manifold.

All untuned on a factory ecu. Runs done over a few different days with over 20 runs per intake and all runs between each intake were within .1 second of each other which proved i was a consistant driver.

Pretty interesting results i thought.

I couldnt notice any difference between the two daily driving them in the low to mid range revs.

sorry, just got back to this thread, there have been tons of dynos. Check out the "how to build honda horsepower" for tons of p30 vs. skunk2 and itr manifold dyno tests, they even have a stock p30 vs. extrude honed p30 dyno test showing the porting was worth 4-6whp from about 4k+ rpm

to me they both are the same. dats why itr n b16 heads r better then the gsr. the heads are the same as will n so is the intake manifold. so no worries its up to you

not sure if it is the correct place to ask, but does anybody know which intake manifold capasity is bigger, b20 or b16?
