What is this black canister on the firewall, what kinda hoses connect to it, and what does it do??

 

That would be your charcoal canister.

 

charcoal canister....google it. It does the same thing on any car.

does anyone have diagrams on that canister. Its one of the only things in my car that I dont know where the hoses go.

 

What car and engine?

 

One hose connects to line running to gas tank, one fat hose goes to your throttlebody, and one skinny one goes the the EVAP purge solenoid/sensor. It's the sensor on the back of the intake manifold to the right of the brake booster nipple.

you most likely do because your in cali, they are there for emisions purposes, some remove them some dont, check with the rules in cali, but im 99% sure you need one.

For california strict emmissions maybe, but no not usually. They never clog up. Mines original from 1994. Doing fine lol.

It relieves extra fuel vapor from the gas tank and reroutes it to the intake manifold so that it doesn't all vent into the atmosphere when you open the tank.

It will cause a CEL if removed in an OBD2 car, but I don't believe it will on OBD1.

 

I did not know this either. I'm a beginning car guy though.
