Default Hello, my name is: Slow Rice (1990 CRX build)

When I bought her:

First day working:

Basically gutted the entire interior minus the dash. Took off the doors, fenders, hood, and hatch and started working on dropping the D15. At this point I'm planning on painting her inside and out (not sure what exactly but thinking Midori on the exterior or maybe Dyno blue Pearl, interior not sure yet). Looking for an simple swap so probably gonna just go with a D16A6 from a CRX si which I've found for under $300 and just rebuild it. Probably even gonna keep the HF transmission we'll see because the clutch is slipping right now. Probably not gonna bother with a wire tuck either. Maybe turbo later? Looking for CRX seats right now, passenger side tail light, drivers side fender, front bumper, and corner lights. This is my first project and I'm 18 so I'm on a budget. I've done a partial engine rebuild on a Cavalier before though so we'll see how this goes.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks I hope it all works out. The bumper is really beat up but it might be worth salvaging. If I keep it I'd have to get a JDM hood too otherwise it looks funky.

Haha yeah it's great. The garage used to fit 3 cars but now the FG2 has to sleep outside.

you're half way there with the jdm bumper. i think the ZC hood looks good on those as well, just my two pennies.

but USDM is still the way to go.

Dropped the engine today and looked at the front brakes and suspension. Apparently the springs were too short for the coilover/shock, so the shock was completely depressed and the spring was just bouncing around the bottom and top hats not taking on any weight at all. Sure felt like it when I first drove her home...NO SUSPENSION

I looked at a D16A6 a guy was selling today and the engine was just shot. I'm thinking it'll be near impossible to find a decent engine from a CRX. Anyone got ideas for a really cheap and reliable swap? Reliability > Cost > Power. I'm looking at picking up a D16Z6 or something like it. Basically a D16 from a 93-00 civic.

Next weekend I'll take her out of the garage, I'll clean the entire car, and start sanding and prepping for paint.

If you're limited on funds, you can get an aftermarket front bumper from:

(323) 789-6304
San Pedro Auto Collision
7314 S. San Pedro

for $65. That's what I'm doin for my 90 SI.

chrap? i hope u mean cheap lol they definately arent crap, the only chrap honda motor i have experienced so far were all dpfi motors lol the rest seem to be pretty good except the y8's, cause of the well known oil issues with those. in my opinion and experience, any sohc or dohc honda motor with a rebuilt using stronger pistons, rods, and a good port/polish of the head with a good aftermarket valvetrain like verrera and some good aftermarket cam/s will last a good 10 years or more with proper maintance. or just get a jdm swap from hmotors

i strongly recomend not using the hf transmission, topping out second at 92mph and only at 6100rpm is not fun well at least from a performance standpoint

Are ZCs a legal swap since they're JDM engines? And they're pretty old now, though I appreciate the direct swap in and good power, I wouldn't want to drop $1000 for an engine that could be shot and I wouldn't know it until I look it apart. That's why I'm thinking about just taking a single cam from any old civic 92-00 since they should be in better condition or maybe an D16a6 for a CRX si if I could find a good one. Hell, maybe I'll just rebuild the one I have for now and save money to do a legit swap later.

This car is gonna see a lot of highway miles cuz I'm buying it for my 60 mile commute to college starting in August. I want to build a beast here but it just doesn't make any sense...yet.

Anyways thanks for the comments guys, more progress should come this weekend.

Yeah Cali laws suck

Planning on removing the window tint tomorrow, any suggestions? I'm planning on using a steamer and just pulling it off since I don't have any ammonia.

First I started with a single edge razor blade on the corner, then when I got a chance to pull the film I took the entire thing out. pretty easy. You might have some glue left over, so windex or glass cleaner will help to take the glue off.

i tried windex and glass cleaner. no bueno. didnt do much. but when i tried goo off and other similar products that worked well. but ya razor and pulling. my buddy did his with a steamer. it took him about a minute per window. but it left sticky residue which he had to go back and clean
