Power and reliability for the money- I'd say B18c. I have a b16 and am relatively happy with it. But I can tell you it really needs more torque. The LS-Vtec can be pretty impressive too if its well built and can still be pretty reliable.
b16
b18c

A B16 a is in a way different leauge than the LS/VTEC.

LS/VTEC's are torque monsters from the darkest recesses of hell. B16's have NO ***** under 4000 RPM.

However, B16's are going to be way more reliable than the LS/VTEC.

I'd say go with the middle ground B18C1.

And I drive an B16A2 by the way.

I'd go with either B16 or B18....LS/Vtec is not reliable.

In terms of price, is a B18b and B16 swap about the same?

a full B16A2 swap is generally about 2500 or so....and the 94+ B18B's are about 2200

I totally dont agree......if built right ls.vtec is reliable, you may not be able to give it the absolute hell you would a b16 or rev it to the moon, but who cares,(its got low end torque, dont need to rev as high) my friend daily drives his B20.vtec and has had no reliability problems. We're turning my B16A into a LS vtec, and I have to have it reliable, and if I felt in any way, shape or form it wasn't then I wouldnt be building it. If done properly with ARP rod bolts and proper other precautions, I say ls.vtec, thats where im headed.

Yeah, I would like to know why people say that stuff... I don't think the LS/VTEC concept has been around long enough to prove if it is reliable or not.

BTW, I would go with the B18C. I have a B16A as well and like a previous member said, no ***** under 4000 rpm...

How come no one ever mentions H22a? Its cheaper than b18c anywhere you go, it has better HP/torque figures, etc..? I dont understand why h22a is so often overlooked.

i would think because b16's and b18's are easier to get... from what i hear, h22's are hard to come by...

i thought h22's were abundant, they jus dont work as well with civics as the b seires does.

LS/Vtec is not reliable.

All this hearsay about lsvtec's. Not one person who bashes one has
ever built one correctly. Do you know anyone with one? Did they build it right?...probably not.

All the horror stories you here are with cheapskates who slap
an lsvtec together and rev the **** out of it.

Don't cheap out. If you take care of it, it will take care of you.

edit*** Also, a lot of people encounter problems if they don't break it in.
correctly

an LS/VTEC setup done correctly will be just as reliable as any other. It's a matter of;having someone doing the build that's done it before, using quality parts, breaking it in right, and treating it good.

i dont think ls/vtec is that bad if built right. i have a b16a right now and ive been thinking of giving that lsvtec a try. but u cant go around cutting corners with it and expect to work like a charm. if u built it correctly + tuned it right + take well care of it = you'll have a monster.

I have a well built ls/vtec and it is very reliable. I drive it hard most of the time and its running stronger than ever. It just take a little longer for the revs to get up there but it has a lot of torque. I had a b16a before this and it had no torque. With three people in the car, it felt like it was going to die, but with the ls/vtec it still pulls with three people inside. I say go with ls/vtec but have someone that has done it before to build it for you.
