Alternator/Charging Issues
Hey guys, I'm kind of in a rut right now. I have a '95 H22A1 Prelude that decided to crap out on me today. I was on the highway, when the speedometer started to freak out on me (jumping all over the place, but never surpassing my actual speed). After about 45 seconds, the speedometer flatlined, shortly followed by the tachometer doing the exact same thing, ultimately flatlining as well.
I kept going, thinking that the VSS might have gone out. Weeelll, about 10 minutes later, I noticed that the lights in the dash were getting progressively dimmer. It got worse and worse, causing me to finally have to pull over at a reststop (the car was so low on energy at this point that using the blinker made the dash nearly go completely out)(oh, and the ABS light came on for some reason). I pulled the car into a parking spot, turned it off, and was not surprised to find that it wouldn't restart.
I popped the hood and played around a bit with some of the wires connecting to the alternator (had the timing belt replaced a few days ago, just making sure everything was properly connected). I got someone to jump the car for me, disconnected the jumper cables, and everything seemed to be in working order. I figured that the car wasn't getting any power from the alternator and was running off the battery towards the end, seeing as it was slowly dying. Anyway, the car was running perfectly fine again, and I was getting full power, seeing as the highbeams, turn signals, etc. were all 100%.
Well, we get back on the highway, everything's working fine, and then I hear a little click after about 5 minutes, everything dims again, and I'm forced to pull over. I guess it's worth mentioning that one of my headlights is partially flooded with water (about .75cm high with water inside the light; I'm replacing it, don't hate). Would that have anything to do with it? Or could it be grounds? I'm at a frickin' loss right now and any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. I'm also 100mi away from home right now. With a retarded car. Help?
And IF it might be the grounds, where would they be located?
Thanks in advance, guys.
