Default Need Transmission Help

Was recently referred to this website in hopes that i can get 2 things solved on my 97 civic.

#1 - while driving, in 1st or 2nd gear, when i let off the gas there is a grinding noise coming from the transmission not loud, but the sound is a bit louder in 1st than in second. Recently bought car and was told the throwout bearing was going out, but my friend says that isnt so, but he has no idea what it is. the sound also goes away once i push in the clutch.

#2 - Im trying the find out what kind of transmission i have incase i have to swap it due to issue #1, so im looking where to find that since its not on the door frame like it is in other vehicles i have driven.

Was told it could be the throwout bearing, but its acting like a free roam bearing when its supposed to be still..Any thoughts maybe?

still thinking about problem #1, but the 97 is likely a d-series engine unless someone swapped it for something else. so basically any trans out of a 92-00 civic with a d-series will work.
