Might be running rich or burning oil?
Is your tail pipe all sooty?

Exhaust gas recirculation and the charcoal canister is a part of a system that injects gas fumes into the motor....

If these components get discontented it can cause fumes.

Do you "top off" when getting gas?

i get a really strong exhaust smell when i have the windows down and i stop at a stop light... is this normal? might it have something to do with that the exhaust currently doesnt have a catalytic converter at the moment?

Yes, that is most likely the problem.

And coincidentally this might also be the OP's problem. CCs take time to warm up before it works at optimum efficiency.

I have a 1995 Honda Odyssey that when idles i smell gas, sometimes its real strong outside car on 100 degree days, but today (only low 90's) I left it idling for 20 or 30 minutes after driving 30 miles home so my husband could smell & you could faintly smell in car??? Please help, i'm desperate. I have been told it could be fuel vapor canister, but mechanic said he didn't know for sure & could try it but it costs $250 for a "possible" fix.
