Just used a Royal Purple oil filter...
Well, I just did my first oil change on the R since buying it. I put roughly 2500 miles on it, and I wasn't sure when the last change was done so I figured it was time.
Now, I typically buy Mobil 1 full synthetic or Royal Purple motor oil and a K&N Gold oil filter... but I found a deal at my local Pep Boys. If you bought 5 quarts of Royal Purple from them you get a new Royal Purple oil filter for free, thus I had to do this.
Of course I should also state that this oil change cost me $54 after tax, and I did it my self...
Oh, and it turns out that the previous owner used standard 5W30 dino oil combined with a POS Fram oil filter.
Anyhoo, I've done quite a bit of research on this Royal Purple filter on BITOG (www.bobistheoilguy.com), and it seems to be the best of the best. However, at $14.99 per filter, that comes at a steep price (I wouldn't have gotten one if it wasn't free). The filter it self has a VERY thick shell (to prevent bulging when it heats up, and thus oil pressure loss... which is why you see race teams put hose clamps around their oil filters), has an anti-drain back mechanism that in turn has a synthetic gasket (vs the standard rubber variety), a bypass valve for extra safety, as well as a full on synthetic filtering element (vs paper or semi-synthetic such as those found in other premium filters. This is a big deal...).
All of this adds up to one bad *** filter. In fact, RP states that this filter does not need replacement until it reaches 12,000 miles!
In any case, I will be dissecting this filter with my Sawzall once it reaches the end of it's life, and I will be posting pictures.
Regardless, this filter seems to be "king shyte" compared to the competition (at least on paper) and is the new top dog as far as oil filters go (a space once held by the K&N Gold, Mobil 1 Extended Performance, and so on). Is it worth 15 bucks? Only if you trust the RP filter to last for 2-3 oil changes.
I will keep you up to date, but I can say that the gurus at BITOG like this filter a whole hell of a lot, which tells a lot about it.
I am a big fan of RP oil, so here is hoping that their new filters live up to the name. I am sure it will though.
FYI, the model number for the ITR filter and the S2K filter are the same. Something interesting for those who use S2K filters to help with oil pressure.

ill stick with my HAMP filters or Mobil1 filters and 10w30 fully synthetic Mobil1 oil. good write up though and im looking forward to the rests of your review.
man, RP was like $6 something several months ago at walmart but I think it went up to like $7 something and maybe now even $8..damn.
Hope it's as good as it sounds.

Can't wait to see the pics. I'm getting my oil online if shipping is free. It's around $10/quart at the store for RP. I didn't know they sold filters either. They don't sell them locally.
Dang! Last time I bought RP was at Pepboys for $6 a quart. Now I'm just buying whatever synthetic that's cheapest at Walmart. Mobil1 and Penzoil Plat are only $23 for the 5qt jugs. Q-Horsepower's 5qt jug was only $18, but they no longer carry it...
The new filter seems interesting, but it's just too dang expensive. Plus I've never seen one in stock...

this might change the way ya guys think about some of the oil filters. enjoy. guys funny too.

I'm only a minute into the video, but already enjoying it. Laughed out loud a few times. They guy's funny, but I think it's more the fact that some guy is by himself, in his garage, in freezing temperatures, looking at oil filters that he has perviously cut apart.
I have either used NAPA Gold, K&N, or Mobil 1 for the R. The oil and filter never gets used for long as i only insure the car for the spring/summer and drive maybe 1000 miles.

Am I missing something here? I've got a vice, I've got a Sawzall, I don't see the issue. Granted it may be overkill, but its got to work better than my alternatives (namely side cutters or a manual hack saw).
Oh, and for those having issues finding the RP oil filters... they aparently have a contract with Pepboys stating that Pepboys has exclusice rights to sell RP filters for a while. They will be available elsewhere later this year. IIRC, you can order these from pepboys.com though.
Granted, I haven't watched the video (I'm on my Droid), but you can't go just by looks of the element. Not all filtering elements are created equal. Something may look similar to something else, but one may filter down to 20 microns while the other filters down to 10.
funny vid bro, havent seen anyone else doing this. i really appreciate you taking the time and your money to do this lil oil filter review. although any judgment on these oil filters should be based on how well they filter out particles and how long the actual filter itself can keep filtering effectively. very interesting to say the least
Well on that note, I should say that I contacted RP and the tech guy informed me that their synthetic filter filters down to 10 microns which is equal to or better than the industry leaders (Amsoil, Mobil1, etc.)
