Default D16A1 Turbo Project Part:1

Just got a D16A1 at a local junkyard along with a Fort Thunderbird turbo. The engine is missing a few sensors and a starter, other than that, not too bad. The turbo spins great. I got this all for $50, yes, that's $50. Pics coming later. Any issues i should know of or tips? Ford t bird turbo good/bad? Please give opinions.

also, are the d series parts interchangable? like if i want skunk 2 adj cam gears, would the D Series cam gear work even though most are sohc? i would just buy 2. would that work? and also for valves, retainers, and valve springs...would they work on this d16a1?

I think that is right. I think the A1 just has 2 SOHC gears.

this is going into a 1st gen correct? otherwise your going to have mounting problems...and should have gotten a blacktop zc instead...

well all this was $50. so i figured i would try it out for $50. i could just rework the mounts and weld them. (i know a welder real good in my town).

turbo looks to be a t3 equivilant eh? garret t25 ish?. make sure the turbo spins freely and that every is no (ideal) or very minimal end play on the shafts. aka **** should wiggle from side to side. also check the seals on the turbo. pull the whole thing apart

You might just want to try and rebuild it, you do not know how long that turbo has been sitting there. It might save you alot in the long run.

So far that looks great man! A1 I am little confused on why you picked this over an A6, that is like what.. 113 hp right? What is the torque like though? Why did you choose it?

What can that turbo push? How is it compared to a t-25 thats in an mitsu?

You would probably have to get ZC style cams I would think. I dont think you could put on two sohc cams because a dohc, I thaught one did exhaust and other did intake? (I'm no dohc man my self) The lobes on a sohc compared to a dohc are completely different I think.

the car that had the turbo just arrived at the junkyard the day i purchased the engine and turbo(monday). so it wasnt sitting there long at all the turbo spins freely and good. thanks for all the info. i never would have guessed the b series cam/cam gears would work on this. does anyone know if the b series valve train stuff(valves, springs, retainers) work?? and i chose this engine because it has (if i can recall correctly) LOW compression - like 8.5:1, and huge ports to flow some good air and also i went to homemade turbo website and they use the HF exhaust mani. is that what is needed?

edit: rated at 118HP but it dont matter with a little boost

Wow, that is pretty low compression there!

Pretty good that the car was still new when it came to the junk yard, the turbo looks like it is in very nice shape from the pictures.

the d16a1 is more like 9.5:1 compression

and zc cam gears and d16a1 cam gears arnt the same as far as i know the d16a1 cam gears are the same as the brown top (85-87) zc

super good deal either way

i have decided to not put the d16a1 in my car considering i know nothing about how this engine was treated, or how many miles are on it, or if its just 'junk' and also everyone says it wont fit so im forgetting it. however, i am keeping the turbo to put on my a6. sohc sleeper
