Default How to know whether its the wheel bearings or tie rod?

When the car is on the jack stands, I happend to notice that there is a some play on the wheels both sides ( I mean, yoyu can tilt the wheel a little bit from left top right...not up and down)

My mechanic friend told me that its the bearings... could it be tie rods? How can I find out...Don't remember getting any sound or anything....thx.

usually a bearing will move up and down and side to side. If you can get someone to shake it so you can look at that backside that would be best. on a tie rod you should be able to see the joint move or atleast feel it. Watch around the axle to see if there is any movement if there is than its the bearing. but honda bearings hold up preety good.

Why throw parts at it instead of just diagnosing the actual problem?

Have someone else move the wheel side to side. To check the outer, you might just be able to see play in the balljoint. It's easy to feel the play if you wrap your hand around where it attaches to the knuckle.

You can usually feel the inner tie rods through the bellows boot so you can check for play there also.

Also, check the balljoints for movement at the control arms.

Since the slop is only side to side, it's probably not the bearing.

Thanks guys..

Had the car on the lift and checked from underneath with easy access to everything...

There is no play/doesn't move any place other than where the wheek connected to hub.
Its more on the driver side than the other side.
Boot on the tie rod is open...Will change that too

Decided to go with pepboys...They carry theSKF ones.

remember to get your car aligned as soon as you get the tie rod on, even if you count threads, it can still eat your tires up
