You were under the car, and you want random people on the internet to explain why a car has two extra shocks welded somewhere under the car.
Talk to the person that owns the car.
Post pictures so we can at least laugh at this.

I will post pics next sat when I bolt them on my car....
The extra hole is most likely for the swar bar

who cars if its a back yard job or if its ghetto suspension. the dude wants to know why would some one use extra shocks. and op you wont find good info like that on a honda site. try sites for offroad 4x4's those guys are at the top of their game in suspension design.
You can add 10 shocks per side if you want, you can add as many shocks as you want to an EF suspension.
You can tape shocks to your doors too.
You can talk to as many 4x4 owners you want, they won't be able to tell you why your civic has useless shocks attacked to the LCA.
It's like finding a winch bolted to the door of the car you just bought.
Retarded on so many levels.
Additionally, EF's are equipped with "stuts" not "shocks"
if you are talking about a "shock" this is clear indication that it doesn't belong on the car.

I know what happened... They took out the strut to "slam" the car and in its place bolted 2 shocks per side. It makes sense, (looking at it from the retard's point of view) after you remove the struts there would be two holes on the wheel well left over. (Three if you count the center for the shock to protrude.) If one were to purchase standard style 2WD front truck shocks, then they would fit perfectly. It would be one shock on one side of the lower control arm and the mirror image on the other side.
Of course, if there is still a strut installed then they probably just used the extra hole for a rear sway bar and drilled a hole in the wheel well. Then they slapped an extra shock on there so they could pull wheelies.
Now lastly, if they actually put 2 strut assemblies per side on the rear, I would love to meet this individual and kick him square in the *********.

Actually you are WRONG, the 4th gen civic is equipped with SHOCK's, once you attach the spring, to the shock, the ASSEMBLY is then called a MacPherson STRUT. HOWEVER, TRUE STRUTS are completely different in DESIGN and FUNCTION. STRUTS are also a structural component of the suspension, and can take the place of two or three suspension components of other systems and are usually used as a pivot point for steering and to adjust the position of the wheels for alignment purposes. Educate yourself a little before giving bad info.

Not being a dick... but you say a "MacPherson STRUT" is a shock with a spring sandwiched between the rod and dead end. You also say that a "TRUE STRUT" is a pivotal point in the suspension for steering purposes. The problem is your attached pictures shows a "MacPherson STRUT" as an articulating suspension piece that moves with the steering assembly. You are contradicting yourself and I shall recommend you correct your description.

However the idea is that a Macpherson strut is a more compact design over seperating the shock and spring, and was designed mainly for FWD cars with limited space.
on a angle
i did do a lil search and the holes for the sway bar are in a diff place from what
the holes for the extra shocks are.. im trying to get a hold of the new owner
to bolt 1 shock and take pics... and post them here...
