my buddy determined that my 98 GS with a LS motor has a broken timing belt... he also said that my motor might be a kind of motor where if the timing belt goes, i have major valve problems, and a possibly dead motor... i have tried to start it a few times thinking it was a distributer so idk... should i get a new timing belt or do you guys think my engine is fried.

 

If the t-belt broke when ur engine was on idle speed might not damage the engine. (i had the same problem 3-4 years ago with my other civic) But if the t-belt broke while u were acually high-revving there is a problem....

 

i was just going like 70 down the PW and the engine just turned off, just crusing thats all... so you think it should be alive still?

 

theres a chance, not a good one if your cruisin, but a chance. good thing ls motors are cheap.

 

Looks like you might have bent your valves. If you tried starting your motor, its not wise to because you might have made it worse. What you can do is buy a new timing belt, put everything together, and try it again. You do know how to set yout car TDC right?

 

check out your timing belt after taking off the covers and see if it is broke. I had a problem on my 96 LS a few years back where the belt didn't actually snap, but rather there were enough teeth on the belt that came off that the belt got to a spot were the engine could not start. I too was going to replace all kinds of stuff, found this and replaced the belt and was back in business. Good luck with the fix.

 

well put a new belt on and try...u might be lucky!

 

i would just put a belt on and see wht happends, i had a belt break in my 98 and luckily the motor was not damaged

 

^Yes. But after you put the belt back on, do a compression test. It will save you time by telling you if your motor is shot or not.

 

is there a timing belt diagram? i bought the belt and want to start it tomorrow

 

take the head off, worst case you bent a few valves.

 

Consult a few good DIY's. Replacing the timing belt is fairly involved and requires some care to do properly. You'll also need some special tools like a crank pulley holder and either a 2' socket extension + large breaker bar or 1/2" min. impact wrench. You should also replace the water pump while you're at it, and do a compression test when you're done (or pull the head).

 

god, ive done a few motor swaps but this sounds alittle bit more technical... but im deadly afraid that a mechanic bill is going to rack up and quickly... i know i need to take off my power steering, and alot of other crap too... this is goign to suck... but hey, maybe ill just buy a new ls swap... and sell the LS head for cheap. and keep the bottem and start a ls-v project and learn as i go... god this is going to be expensive

 

**** it. im goign to pull the AC out, replace the water pump, themostat, and radiator too... cause my hose's never build pressure... in the winter it was fine, but since its getting warm out i wont joke around, and as far as my knowlage goes, the water pump circulates the radiator fluids correct? and the themostat controls it? so id be redoing all my cooling?

 

to get the valves it should be like 3 bucks a valve. the belts gonna be like 30 bucks from a autoparts store, the pump should be like 50. the head gasket should be 40. its not that bad once you add it up

 

yea, but ive never played with the internals of a engine before and i always liek to watch someone do it properly before i try it myself. but we will see. ill keep you guys posted

 

i lost teeth on the belt. its all fixed and im at the kids house. thanks for the advice guys
