Default What questions should a Newbie ask?

I've been on a week and doing searches almost every day

so maybe I am going about this the wrong way

talking road racing a ITA CRX

given your experience what should a Newbie to the CRX ask about in regards to performance and or reliability

for example I get on here and start asking about 16" rims and a experienced person on the CRX would say no dude 16" rims are illegal you should be asking what's the best legal rim

thanks

First, figure out if you like the CRX. It is a competitive car. Then figure out if you have the bank account for it. Then figure out if it is OK for you to ball it up one day and walk away from it. If all of this is yes, figure out what organization and class you are interested in racing. For me, SCCA ITA is where I am. There are other classes in SCCA for the car as well as in NASA.

Rims are probably very low on the priority list.

What is the status of your car?

Determine what sanctioning body you want to run in.
Performance and reliability are relative terms.
Money, the driver, experience determines those factors most of the time.
Choose your chassis and read the CCR"s. It will help you determine what mods you can make that are legal for the class you want to run in.
Asking whats covered or illegal without reading whats in the CCR's is just lazy.
Your on the right track keep reading.

Dave, are you a noob to driving on track in general? You can simplify your learning process by ignoring the racing ruleset for the time being and focus on just driving. HPDEs are available, and it doesn't matter what is done to the car as long as its safe.

and what questions to ask...

well ask alot of them. that is the only way to learn.

i had stinky as an instructor last year and after about the 3rd session on the first day i think we sat in the car and talked for probably a minimum of 5 minutes each session after that.

im not saying ask well the next track event do i need new wheels..16s or 15s etc. it is a discussion of the overview of what happend in that session.

like dirty said..look over ccrs then your questions will not be about parts they will be about legality of parts and also you will get into setup questions etc.

sorry for the random rambling..work is slow.

wow interesting points

not to much of a noob used to do PCA events and ran SOLO II for 10 years also used to test drive cars for a living we had a 5 mile oval with 15 deg of banking on the high lane (the track was only rated at 90 mph)

wisdom says do HPDE's (we used to call the track events or PCA since they where the only ones that held them) until I get back in the groove.

I am already thinking this would be a great FP car but that's a great point when you say find out if you like the CRX (its been like 11 years since I worked on a Honda)

"What is the status of your car?" the car has a ITA log book from last year and its is ready to go

smelled gas when I took the air tube off the throttle body and a look at the spark plugs confirmed that its pig rich

thanks for the responses

I'd suggest that you run the car in ITA till you figure out what you want to do. It il probablybe the cheapest way to go for now. Open your wallet if you are going to be committed to a production class.

Do you have a license?

I am from TX but live in CO, I Bought Deeny Dows car and he and the car came from Florida

I could see it he did not want to part with it

I don't expect to be some hot shoe since I will be 50 this year, but if I can make the car faster then that would be cool

next goal is to try to get my narrow band AFR meter hooked up

So you're not really a newbie.

In case any newbie comes along to read this topic for advice to newbies, the NASA web page on HPDE events is a good place to start.

Why do you say that? Lots of guys who are in their 50s or older win plenty of races. Heck, Paul Newman would show up at SCCA events and kick some but in his late 70s.

What size rims came with the car for dry tires? The CRX is a fantastic ITA car.
