Default dirt in b16 head

so i recently purchased a b16 and the people who took it out of their car didnt know what they were doing and somehow they got rocks dirt etc in the head when they took the valve cover off i believe they had the valve cover on the ground and dirt got into it and they set it on the head and it all fell in. i know the motor ran before it was pulled and im almost positive that there was no dirt in it while it ran. i would like to know what i should do about getting the dirt rocks etc out of the head. should i totally take off the head and run it through a parts washer and if i do that then dont i have to get the head re surfaced also is there a way for me to be able to clean it all with out taking the head off i am new to this and your help is much appreciated thank you.
