Default what happened to these bearings?

i got this b18a1 block yesterday and i opened it up to notice that all the rod bolts where only hand tight. so i removed the rods and this is what i found. scary music cue....

so i dont think he spun a bearing? why does it look like it does and what does it mean? cause that would mean the bearing moved right? and all 4 rods and bearings look like that but the mains look fine.

p.s sorry for all the Qs just need to know your expertise

f-in idiot people amaze me

Damn your hands are scary!
looks like it ran too hot from the blue/purple marks, but the grinding seems to be from oil starvation.

Lol thx my hands are alittle scary lol. So it would have been caused by

Ls oil pump not enough oil after 7k

Oil leak

lack of oil --> spun bearings, can be from over revving as well

Well since the rod bolts where just hand tight, I would say the the clearance was to big and the oil pushed out of the journals to fast and easy (internal oil leak) so it just didn't get proper oiling and was getting hot. It's not real smashed out so I would think that the cranks rod journals are still round and usable, I would check all the rod journals on the crank with mic's just to be sure. Check the rods them selfs too and if all good get new bearings, torque them to spec and go for round 2 and have fun.

Yeah, they're hot but when you see a really starved engine you'll see that the bearings are welded to the crank. Here is just looks like the bearings are shot. Pictures of the crank?

The far left journal looks questionable by looking, but hard to tell w/o feeling it. if you end up needing a LS crank i have a fresh micro-polished one for sale pm me.

I would get it to a machine shop and see what they say. If you have to take off the hard nickel-chrome coating from the journal i wouldnt use it. The tolerances will be loose and can cause rod slop/knock.

I would at least take it to the machine shop and let them check it as well, may just need to be polished back up. If u run ur finger over then journals and feel any indents then it maybe scrap. U could have it resurfaced and just use over sized bearings, I have had success with that but totally up to u.

Looks to me it was caused by insufficient lubrication, whatever the reason.. Low oil, beating on the engine, weak oil pump, diluted/dirty oil. The discoloration is from heat, another result of insufficient lubrication...
If that engine had been run with the rod bolts ONLY finger tight, I believe it would have blown almost immediately...
That leads me to believe the seller knew there was an issue with the engine. Sounds like they pulled the engine and checked the bearings, realized what they had, and threw it back together.. Did it look like someone was recently in there? Hope they were straight up with you...

Get everything thoroughly checked by a machine shop. Probably have to get the rods re-sized and the crank journals polished if there not damaged.

You just gotta inspect everything really carefully before closing the deal...
Anytime I buy something used, I bring some tools along to check or measure it.
Cams,cranks,whatever...A few minutes with a micrometer can save you alot of money.
