Transmission Additive Anyone?
Anyone using any type of transmission additive in their trannys? I have a GSR tranny and its starting to feel...weak? Changed out the fluid to OEM fluid not too long ago, and clutch is an exedy just over a year old. I noticed that once the tranny gets driven on hard a few times, it wont go into 2nd. Just wondering if anyone was experiencing the same problem and what you used to solve/help it out a bit?
inspect your shift linkage!
people swear by GM syncromesh including me.
if the linkage is ok, and syncromesh doesn't help, you will need a rebuild.

But yeah my tranny has nearly 290,000 miles on it and still shifts flawlessly, even with the short shifter I've been using for nearly 200K miles since 2001.
if you are driving hard could be a torn motor mount too. Hard shifts with a torn mount sometimes it is very tough to get in gear. I thought i had a problem with the trans, turned out once i replace motor mounts. shifted smooth again. have been using honda mtf. no problems. auto-x and hpde

I have run the FM fluid exclusively with nothing else for nearly 150K miles, since 2003.
It's pretty hard to find the Friction Modified stuff. You may be able to get it online somewhere, but it will be expensive. I bought the last 6 quarts from a local Chevy dealer where my buddy used to work back in 2008 for his cost, came out to less than $60 for the 6 quarts.

I honestly can't say if regular SM is any better than Honda MTF. It probably isn't. If you're going to try SM you might as well just get the Pennzoil stuff available at any auto parts store.
And don't bother mixing it. Just use one or the other - 3 quarts for 2.3 qt. capacity.

Yes sir its expensive, 12$ a bottle took 3 and a 1/4 to fill mine and I work at a shop, n got mine at cost. For the penz SM. Totaly worth it!

Guy at AZ doesn't know jack. Transmission takes about 2.3 quarts, so you need to buy 3.
Wuttup....what if it grinds in different gears, and only sometimes. Weird but sometimes will grind normal drivin, sometimes it won't. Most of the times, when it does grind it's 2nd and 3rd gear....iono
I put the Gm synchromesh in my 92 and it works great. I agree with Patrick, it took 2 full quarts and some of a third bottle to fill mine. It was like $12 a quart at the dealer but in my opinion it was money well spent.
Grinding or crunching is typically a sign of wear on the teeth on transmission parts, including hub selectors, synchros, and the drive gears themselves. Some transmission fluids like the Synchromesh may mask those symptoms, but that's what causes it. Unfortunately, the permanent solution involves taking the transmission apart, which is labor intensive in addition to the cost of the parts.
synchromesh or redline mtf here.
the only other issue that can cause gear grinding is the clutch. if you have your clutch set to engage off the floor it's possible to get 2nd gear grinds when you're redlining 1st since there is that much less time the clutch is in before second. actually fixed a grinding car once by changing the TB.

Even if it's intermitten? (sp)...
