I'm relatively new to the car community. Anyone wanna help me understand the pros and cons of Automatic Transmission and the Stick Shift?

stick shift is usualy a little faster and alot more fun to drive. Automatic cars are cool, but to me they are boring to drive, unless its a F360 Modena.. but when would u get to drive one of those. Auto is cool for stop and go traffic and crusing, but stick is way more fun to drive

first rule.. calling it a stick shift is mad ghey. to sound kewl. call it a manual or refer to the # of forward gears. like 5 speed or 6 speed.

Alot of the old school V8's came in auto, which is fine and dandy cause it has so much torque. But if you buy a small 4 cylinder, a manual transmission is a must.

Personally I hate auto trannies on sports cars. The ITR is available in manual only (thank god).

If you drive in rush hour everyday and hate changing gears, automatic trannies are for you. But if you plan to do any kind of racing a manual tranny is a must(unless your car has 1000ft-lb tq).

Gotta hate those suv soccer mom who are feeding there kids, putting on lipstick, drinking a coffee, talking on their cellphone and driving at the sametime

Hey,

I started, learnt and got my license in an auto. I had to go manual in preparation for the purchase of a Type R. And i refuse to touch the controls of an auto ever since

The only thing that'll make me go back to the auto now is if i become disabled

I can only think of 1 pro of an auto transmission: Convenience. That's it.
And there are many cons like: bad mileage, driveline loss (HP), weight, size, less gears, gear oil temperature, lag (slow shifting), cost of manufacturing (maybe not in the US)......

Isn't an automatic transmission the tranny of choice for drag racers? The shifts are more controlled and consistent. I once heard of a guy doing a 6-speed to auto conversion on a 99 LS1 Camaro, specificaly because he was a drag racer. I cant see myself ever going back after owning the Type R, but that is me. Just pointing out that there may be an advantage to an auto trans in one form of racing. I just dont know how streetable the shifts of the auto would be if set up specically to drag race. It probably shifts pretty sharp.

I have a '01 Ford Taurus with an auto v8. Really I havent noticed any problems with it in terms of speed, or acceleration. I ca get it going on a highway entrance ramp from 10-80 mph somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-7 seconds, depending on road conditions. And of course, as others have pointed out, it's very convenient to have auto when in city traffic.

So I'm guessing from everyone's input that the advantages to a stick are better acceleration, and longer life.

that doesnt apply anymore....theres auto 5 speeds and 6 speeds out there now....and how bout audi and there variable transmission...aparently has limitless gears

Automatic trannys can be very advantageous in turbo cars, because the shifting is done at throttle so the turbos don't spool down....but, it'd have to be the right auto shifter. Automatics sap power compared to their rather efficient manual counterparts....they're boring, they're more expensive to maintain, harder to work on...and as said before, they suck.

Manual tranny is for people who drive, auto is for loozas who get around.

In the proper application a well set up auto will get you down the road or track just fine...

If you want to drive to improve yourself, a manual will get you better results, because you get to choose your shift points and be in whatever gear you choose..

Manual trannies will never up or down shift on you in the middle of a hair pin...
