Tire Pressure
So I am a little confused. So I have a 96 civic hatch and I was planning on running 35-40 psi on the front and 30-35 psi on the back. And reading people's suggestions that seems about right. What I am confused is that whether these psi measurements are measured when the tires are hot or cold? Help please THANKS!
It depends in part on what kind of tires you're using.
With R compound track tires, you can usually find the tire manufacturer's recommendation for a certain pressure measured HOT, so that's what you're shooting for. Depending on the outside temperature and your car setup, you sometimes know what that translates to measured cold so you can set those before you start; otherwise, you can guess and then adjust by checking the pressures at the end of each run. For example, the R comps I'm using are recommended to be 38-40 psi measured hot, so I usually start out around 33 psi at both ends and that's where I wind up.
With street tires, you don't typically have a specific hot recommendation to use, so it can be more trial and error. When I'm using street tires on the track, I usually start out with the car manufacturer's recommendation - for example, on the Integra Type R and GS-R, it's 35F/33R, measured COLD - and then adjust as necessary from there. I've found that that's a pretty good starting point.
So to answer your question... I would guess something around 34-36F, 30-33R measured COLD would be a good starting point with street tires; if you have R comps, I would start out with a cold measurement 5-7 psi less than the hot pressure you're aiming for. In either case, adjust as needed based on how the car is handling and what the hot pressures are coming off the track.
