Default civic 2000 model/rattling

Hey,
I have a civic 2000 manual tranny and a two questions, I got the car not too long ago and firstly, i wanted to know whats the best way to find out the model? I have looked everywhere and it doesn't say if its the EX/LX/etc. Its a coupe (Canadian) and i tried getting the info on it through vin which just says the model as (SE) but I thought SE was just for hatchback's :S

Also I seem to be having some issues with the gearbox (I think), When I shift from 1st to 2nd or even 2nd to third, the car makes a bit of rattling/"currr" noise. It rarely happens in 4th/5th gear but every time during 1st/2nd. I took it to a nearby mechanic who told me its just the exhaust shield but I have a hard time believing it. Any experience with such situation is appreciated!
Thanks a lot

Does it feel like there is grinding when you hear the noise? I had a rattling that was driving me crazy, used a mechanics stethescope for like an hour trying to diagnose the problem, and convinced myself it was something with the valves. Woke up the next morning to take off the valve cover to poke around a little more and dropped a wrench on the exhaust shield right before I started. It was the noise that was driving me crazy, turns out I dropped a bolt and it was rattling around in there. I'm almost embarrassed to say that, but pain in the *** turned out to be simple fix

sounds like your tranny main bearing is making the noise.
give me the first 5 digits of your vin # and then i'll be able to tell you if the car is a EX,SI or SIR

There was a 00 se for canada only I think, it's basically a dx coupe with si (or ex in the us) options (power windows, ac etc.) but it still has the d16y7.

If pretty sure it's still a ej6 tho, but yeah check your vin# to see.
