Icon6 The ever re-occuring "ls/vtec build thread"

Ok, please bear with me I know there are Ls/vtec build threads on here by the hundreds it seems, but after a lot of searching all over I was not able to find someone running the setup I want to run so I am asking for everyones input. Its going to be my DD but with hopefully enough power to win a race or two ha.

BOTTOM END

-b18a1 block bored out to 82mm (stock sleeves)

-RS Machine 82mm pr3 pistons (chose pr3s because p30s were giving me too high compression with the combo of my head and 82mm bore etc.)

-stock Ls crank

-Ls eagle h-beam rods (ARP rod bolts of course)

-THINKING ACL race bearings

-gsr block girdle if you guys think its necessary

HEAD

-Stock p72 gsr full head/intake mani/tb

I know everyone is gonna let me know how much head work/intake mani will help but I'm on a sort of tight budget so I figured I would do the block right and then when I get more money, do the head right.

INBETWEENS ha

-golden eagle ls/vtec kit with 82mm head gasket (stock thickness I think golden eagle ships them with)

-ARP head studs

OTHERS

-new gsr water pump

-new gsr timing belt

-new gsr oil pump

-full gasket kit if I can get a good deal to replace them all

- stock ls tranny for hopefully as short of a time as possible, then type r or b16

According to my searching ( http://www.zealautowerks.com/bseries.html ) I should be at a 12.38:1 compression ratio. Also damn near 1.9 displacement should be a little bit of fun. I'm excited to get the build started but I have not bought anything yet so everything is still up for your manipulation ha. Let me know what you guys think, if I have anything unnecessary for this DD build, or if I'm missing anything. I'm still undecided on tuning software and injector size too. Oh and it's all going in my 91 integra (I know my name says 90, that was my last integra)

Are you using GSR cams also?

If you are going to be using GSR cams then you should consider P73 pistons. The lower compression won't be too much for the smaller primary lobes.

You won't need the GSR main girdle. I would highly recommend a Performer X intake manifold, it could be good for 10whp or more over the stock manifold. You haven't mentioned a header, lots of people have had good luck with the replica headers available in the marketplace here. VtecKidd is the seller, I think.

The cable Integra transmissions aren't that bad as far as gearing is concerned. The '92-'93 Integra transmissions are a little stronger and the YS1 GSR transmission would be an excellent choice, the gearing is similar to the Type R. Another plus for the later transmissions is that they can accept hydro transmission LSDs.

yea I'm pretty set on b16 or type r trans, but like you said the ls isn't too terrible so I'm not too worried about it being in there for a while. I do have a greddy 4-1 that came with the car and a full greddy 2.5 inch sp2 so I think I'm fine as far as that goes.

anyone know much about the greddy 4-1 one piece header? I don't see them brought up much.

ive got a similar engine, it a 91 rs teg.

its 82mm ITR pistons(stock rings)
stock ls rods with arp bolts (resized)
acl race mains
stock b16(no hole drilled) rod bearing
stock b16 head with itr valvetrain
supertech flat valves
gsr cams
block and head a been decked and mille(forgot how much) but with the calculations before the engine was built i believe my compression was around 12.3

im happy with the engine it performs good in my stock weight teg running the 100mph trap in the 1/4 just was having problems with getting off the line with the 2.5 60 foots, so my best time so far is 14.4, but with work and more suspension tuning i should beable to get 13.8

I'm currently running a similar setup in my eg hatch

b18b
stock ls rods with arp rod bolts
arp head studs
pr3 pistons
b16 head
b16 springs and gsr cams
hytech replica header with 2.5 exhaust and magnaflow muffler
aem cold air intake
stock b16 intake manifold and throttle body
chipped p28 ecu running wayyyy too rich since has old tune from blox cams
10lb flywheel and F1 clutch (don't hate, have run 3 of them and they work great)
stock LS tranny ( I actually like this, great on the freeway commute)

coming soon: BPI velocity stack, short ram intake, itr intake manifold, 68mm throttle body, cam gears. Should dyno tune it on chrome at Redzone next month I think when I save up some money.

with blox intake manifold, 65mm tb and blox C cams previous owner put down 197whp with stock injectors. have no idea what it makes now (just bought it) but feels plenty fast, guessing low 14 second car, and easily gets 30+mpg if I can keep my right foot in check! haahah
torque is good though, much faster than I expected actually (this is my first honda). will light the tires up in 1st gear just stabbing the throttle with my 16' tires and a LS tranny.

my goal is to hit high 13s on nitto drag radials and get well over 30mpg. high 13s should be fast enough to catch a few mustangs off guard with a little civic for sure! my first stock 5.0 mustang only ran 14.8 and my bond stock ls1 6 speed camaro ran 13.3 with a lid and street tires (and my ***** driving) so a high 13 should be pretty good for a all motor civic. Probably will need a type r tranny and some cams for that though.

I don't know what kind of budget you are on but if you are patient you can get an AEBS or blox intake manifold for 100-150 easy on here or craigslist. that will make a big difference and save you the time of installing a gsr manifold you're just going to take off eventually and you WILL need to get it tuned before you drive it even half way hard or you will blow it up. I got my type R im with 68mm tb for $200 and they are both polished to look like chrome.

or you could just leave the head and intake stuff all stock and spray it with a 50 shot using a $300 used kit on here.... I am building up parts to run a direct port 75 shot to hit 12s on street tires.

consensus is you don't need a block girdle and I wouldn't waste my time with a greddy header, either buy a rmf or hytech replica, or just get something cheap used till you can. there is a guy on here that put down 191whp with itr cams and this $70 ebay header!
