Which transmission is best? Accord 2004 automatic 4 cyl or 6 cyl?
Hi guys,
I'm considering buying a 2004-2005 Accord. I'd like the 6 cyl but I'm worried about how weak the transmission can be. Also there are a couple good options for 4 cyl.... I'd like your input on which transmission is best...
4 cyl automatic or 6 cyl automatic.
thanks for your help. any experiences you've had are welcome

The 6 cylinder transmissions do have a history, but my 03 V6 hasn't had any problems at 75k miles. I would agree that a V6 is more of a gamble, but I love the 6 cylinder engine, and wouldn't trade it for a 4 cylinder right now. Don't know if I would buy a used one right now though. It's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.
I have a 2003 accord, with the V6. I beat the poor thing up, flooring it all the time, I love it. Nothing has gone wrong since I bought the car 3 years ago. I also baby it though, every week checking oil, fluids, air pressure, etc.
I would go with the v6 personally.
I have 165,000 miles btw, nothing ever went wrong except for regular scheduled maitenence

I too have a 2003 Honda Accord V6. Yeah its been heard that they have tranny problems, but i have about 97,000 miles on my car and haven't had any problem with the transmission. I say i would go wit the V6 more power.
I personally know someone with a J-V6 and the transmission died at 97,000 miles. You are looking at a 5-6 year old car. You don't know the past history. I would not take that chance.
Like any recall or problems, it could be 1 out of 10,000. You don't want (to afford) to be the One.

With any used car, you are taking a chance. People abuse cars, when they know it will be sold or traded in before the warranty runs out. I would have to know the history.

My V6 Odyseey tranny die on 110,000miles and sold the car as-is for dirt cheap.
My V6 03 Accord tranny just start slipping about 6 months ago and finally stalled on 100,000 miles last week, and I had to call tow to move the car.
Previously, I owned Honda Accord 1992 I4 drove 168,000 miles and never had any issue.
I do admit I drive kinda hard even all of above cars are automatic, but are those Honda V6 tranny only last 100,000 miles?
My 03 Accord replace with rebuild tranny for $1,800 (new for $4,000) and found all engine and tranny mounts are broken too cost $400 just for parts.
All those cars were bought new and drive only by me or my wife.
For my next car, I don't think I want to buy Honda car anymore. Just my 2cents~

For safe side, Honda car is good to own for top 6 years. Unless there is extend warranty on powertrain etc., 2004 is about to be a breaking point.

9.5 times out of 10 trans failures on newer accords are related to gross negligence. (never changing the fluid)
It remains to be seen. I too, would like to believe Honda made improvements. So far so good from what I heard from ~ 2005 Ody owners. We can't deny that there were design flaws with the older Honda automatic transmissions.

I work on them every day. I made a qualified statement.
You certainly do.
However, are you discounting the statement made publicly by Honda, that the transmission serious problems with durability, which lead to a class action lawsuit, recalls, Honda extending the warranty coverage, and also "goodwill repairs?"
Also that XXX,XXX number of owners do not understand the requirements for proper transmission maintenance?
Some of this is covered in TSB 02-062.

Honda needs to let owners know, the transmission fluid should be changed well before the 120k miles indicated in the owner's manual (normal interval). It would probably help, if V6 owners knew there was a filter, that will probably be totally clogged up, well before 120k miles. I'm sure they would rather have extra maintenance costs, than transmission replacement costs. I can only assume they've decided that changing the fluid (and filter) more often, would not help.
