Default Intake cam gear bolt broke

okay, long story short. i'm replacing my timing belt and accidentally over-torqued the intake cam gear bolt and the bolt broke off. now half of the bolt is inside the cam shaft.

- what do i need to do to be able to take out the bolt inside the cam shaft?
- how much does a replacement bolt usually cost?

Replacement bolts are probably cheap -- not sure what you can do about that camshaft, though. IDK if it's a good idea to try to drill it out. Maybe PB and vice grips if there's some thread sticking out. You may also be able to weld a nut onto what's left of the bolt and grab it with a socket wrench. GL.

theres no thread sticking out, so no go on the PB and vice grip idea. and i'm also debating if i should try to drill it out or just try to find another used cam shaft or something.

I'd just get new a new cam. I bet you could find used LS cams super cheap. Going aftermarket might not be worth it for you if you're keeping her stock.

i'm sure it will be easier to just buy a used camshaft. stock ones are everywhere and in low demand.

alternatively, you could grab the Crower 62402 which will give about 10hp and stronger top end. they run around $300 i believe

Check on craigslist for some stock cams. Most guys will eventually throw in the bolt for the camshaft. the replacement bolt should be under 10.00. I paid almost 9 bucks for a tensioner bolt from the dealer.
I could be wrong but I think the cam bolt is tq down to 45 ft lbs.

Remove cam and take it to a machine shop and have them remove whats left ot the bolt or get a used one which ever is most cost effective for you.

^ doesn't he have to drill a hole into the busted bolt? Then hammer that in right?

i think you drill a hole in the middle of the broken bolt then run the extractor in the hole. since it reverve pitched, it grabs the bolt and spins it out.

i just dont wanna **** up the threads inside the cam...

You should be okay, just dont drill the hole at an angle. Drill her straight. using the smallest drill to mate witht he extractor. Go from there.

BTW, LS cam bolts are 12mm (Vtec - 14mm) so they have lower torque specs and the bolts break much much easier.
