hello,

i have a 1999 civic si and i was low on oil, really low and i filled it up with a jug of oil. when it was low on oil, the engine was making like a "fluttering" sound or like a quick puffing of air sound. now its doing the same noise but not alot of power. the sound comes around 2000 rpm. any help what this could be?

ok update, just went out to the car and cylinder 1 spark plus was drenched in oil. i will be getting 2 new spark plugs. you guys think the air puffing sound was the engine misfiring? or a blown piston ring, because i took out 3L of oil and still was above the max. fill line on the dipstick. major overfilling can cause major damage or new spark plugs and i shall be fine? its just soo weird because when the motor had NO oil, it was still making that puffing air sound, alittle but later in the rpm's (around 5k+) and when i did put oil, even though it was too much oil, it still is making that puffing air sound. i dont know what an engine misfiring sounds

overfilling can blow out seals/gaskets. can really cause big problems. i would drain all oil & replace filter. those motors usually anywhere from 3.75qts. to 4.5 qts. If u put in 4L(about 1.5gals) you way over filled by about 2qts. A 1/4qt over wont really hurt anything. So I would drain, refill, check dipstick @ 3.75qts after starting & add to that. Good luck

You probably had 2qts in oil pan(which wouldnt read on stick),which is why oil level was so high, should have checked dipstick as you added & not put all in at one time. Lesson learned?
