H22A in civic...will not start -- HELP!
as title says,
we just installed h22a into 93 civic coupe ex (ej1) and have everything ready to go.
just fixed fuel connection problem i had earlier with no fuel leaking.
thing is, when you crank the motor, the flywheel spins, the starter spins, yet it won't start. we checked for spark (we took put the spark plug and put it into the spark plug wire on all 4 cyl's and WILL spark when put next to the frame, but will NOT spark holding up the spark plug with it inside the wire)
is this normal?
and i don't know if fuel is being delivered...please help!
we also replaced the new spark plugs with another set of new spark plugs and still won't spark with it inside the plug wire, yet only by the frame

if you try to start your car you can tell if your getting fuel by just smelling it. Just pull a plug you can tell if it the fuel. Do you have all the ground to the motor and trans on? will it spark onto the motor and the frame as long as the sparkplug sparks to the motor that means its good. Recheck the firing order. Also do you know if the motor ran before? check fluids too.
I had the same problem in my civic when I installed the H22. First thing to check is are you pushing in the clutch when you try and start it? 2nd thing is to make sure your wiring is correct and all your sensors are hooked up especially your KNOCK sensor it will not start without this hooked up. I have seen alot of people do this swap and it wont start at first these two things are THE MOST common problem, especially the KNOCK sensor. Good luck I hope this fixes your problem so you can go smoke some v8 ***
they wont know what hit em

Hey bro I told wiring the knock sensor would get it started, you should have listened to me while I was at your house
j/k bro, anyway i'll be back in the morning to help you finish the final touches and get the beast on the road again.

man, i can't thank everyone enough.
this is going in my sig for a LOOONG time.
after putting starter fluid in there, she started to run, then died. we thought this was a fuel problem but we knew fuel was being delivered to the fuel rail.
so we took off the top screw of the fuel rail connection, and turned on the fuel pump and fuel squirted out -- so we knew fuel was going.
after that, grabbed a test light, and put it to the yellow/black wire on the resistor pack (power for the fuel injectors) and turned on the fuel pump and got power to it.
after that, i just decided to -- ahh hell with it, cranked it over and it started bogging then RAN!!! w00t w00t.
I have bouncy idle and raised the idle, so i will have to play around and get the vacuum lines right n such, but that is a easy prob compared to the rest of the ****.
the car will be finished on sunday, total of 3 days project

I could not have done it with out support of my friends, i can't thank you guys enough.
i hope u know u guys are so wrong about the knock sensor. a car WILL start AND run without the knock sensor being hooked up. matter-of-fact, the ecu won't even know it's not there until your car starts and gets up to ~5000 rpm (i think that's the rpm). as for your bouncy idle, are you getting any CEL's? i know almost everything about this swap and all the problems that come with it. i went through a lot getting mine to work.

h22civiccoupe was my friend trying to get it thru my head to wire it up anyways since it wouldn't start at the time, and this is exactly what i said

is your EGR system hooked up?
I wonder if that has anything to do with the wavy idle problem
I think i'll hook up EGR tonight.

Glad to see you making progress. I should be taking some more pictures of the car this weekend as I finish putting the insides together and such.. Good luck with everything else mang.

thanks for ur help man.
The code i am getting now is EGR, and throws it in to limp mode. I also have a small vacuum leak or a small wavy idle, it's all because of that damn EGR valve.
I saw the Red Bull can trick and I'm goign to put that bad boy on and hopefully fix the problem, as well as get a better fuel line that is shorter.
turns out the code was MAP sensor, I didn't see the second code.
I was getting EGR and MAP sensor, map sensor was easily replaced with the civic's, now she idles perfectly. I sometimes throw EGR code, not very often however, and doesn't put it into safe mode.
thanks for all the help man

Nah its an old trick to check for spark. You can use a screwdriver just to see if the spark will jump to it and if not the you know you have a problem. If it does then you know you are all good.

about the not starting problem, the damn connector to the resistor pack wasn't *all* the way in, so she clipped right in and started up.
Jason, and those who drilled thru your cars for the shiftlinkage,
did you guys seal up that hole and if so what'd u do?
