Ticking Noise
Alright so heres the deal. I've been having this ticking noise and I keep thinking its coming from my valves or somewhere in my head. Well I thought maybe it was time to do a valve adjustment so I did. And the noise is still there. Whats odd is the noise comes and goes and its sometimes loud sometimes not. I was wandering what everyone thinks could be the problem... Need help?
it could be your timing chain tensioner. A very common part that causes the noise you discribed. Be warned though it has been known that the noise comes back after only 10k or so after replacing the part.
There is a fix where you sand blast a threaded sleeve in the TCT to remove wear marks and it works better than new. Billman on s2ki has a description and pictures.
I purchased a Harbor Freight sand blaster for $15 and it took only minutes to fix. Hardest part is retracting the piston. Requires a 1-1/2 inch or more M5 bolt, nut and washer.
No more purchasing new timing chain tensioners just to have them go out in 4000 miles.

More than likely it is your timing chain tensioner. It’s an easy fix (do a search in S2ki and you find a detailed thread on it).
To avoid the tensioner going bad you have to stay on top of your oil. I've read that dips in oil pressure or volume cause the timing chain tensioners to go bad.
Hope that helps
