Default intake ???

Hey i bought my 2000 py itr about a month ago and have been doing nothing but research. They are amazing cars. It came with a comptech intake on it. My question is should i keep this intake or get a aem, password jdm, or something else. the mugen one is out of my price range right now. thanks for any help. glad to be a itr owner.

I've heard that's a pretty good intake, apparently pretty close to the Mugen. My girlfriend had an icebox on her EP3 which was pretty good.

Seriously, most intakes are simply filters on a stick. There is minimal difference between almost all of them power wise. We are talking about a 1-2WHP difference between brands in most cases... IF that.

Now, if you were to buy one outright assuming that you never had one to begin with, you may want to look at things like where you live (i.e. if it rains/floods a lot where you are, a short ram like the Password JDM might be in order to prevent accidental hydrolock by sucking up water), CARB exemption, and/or if you want something louder or quieter (typically SRIs' are louder than CAIs')... but since you already have a decent intake, just forget about it and spend money on something else more worth while...

...Like tires.

On a related note, I had a Password JDM, J's Racing knock off, carbon fiber whale ***** SRI on my B18C5'd EM1 Si. It was a very nice piece. In fact, I was planning on getting another one for my ITR (I just bought mine 2 weeks ago... the ITR not the intake), but since the car came with a Injen Cyborg CAI, I'm not going to bother.

I agree with the guy above, just keep what you have and spend the money elsewhere.
If you were going to change intakes, an ebay intake works just as fine as those high priced name brand intakes fyi.

This would be true for all the "AEM style" intakes, or even the password one. A few intakes do rise above the rest for good reason. The Comptech has proven itself to be among the best. Mugen is still #1 in terms of power for our car's. But Comptech is right up there with it.

Keep it.

You know, the OP simply said he has a "comptech intake". This does not mean that he has the Ice Box version/addition.

What other intake did Comptech make? I dont recall any other version unless it was the newer CT Engineering version.

They made a hot-air intake before the icebox.

Yeah, Comptech made a filter-on-a-stick back in the day (pre-dates the icebox). It was a polished tube with a filter on it. The tube had a comptech logo on it I believe.

Edit: Maybe it might still be available (or at least was a little bit ago). It's not the eaxct pic, but there is a listing.

I tested out quite a few at the Dyno on a fairly stock ITR (i/h/e) years ago. The icebox, J's, ARC both the box and tube, and the Mugen as well as combinations between them all and the stock setup.
The ARC sucked, no pun intended, if you were going to buy it just get the Air box.
The Icebox was mediocre and wasn't much better than stock
The J's did decently and better than the other two
but the Mugen did the best, had a great spike of power between 3500-5500 area and had about 12-15whp added midrange and about 5-7 up top.

Yes the Mugen is expensive but with the money people drop on a good header for the gains it gives don't cheap out on the intake.

That looks like the current CT one as well.

Do you still have the dyno plots and if so can you post them? All the old threads with that info no longer have working pics.

Tell me about it, all my old picture posts are down once I cancelled the Server i hosted IPS at, I do have all the site files backed up on disk, I just have to see if I have those on there.

If I don't have it take my word for it, I have nothing to gain from saying the Mugen is the best other than the person who gets one having an ear to ear smile.

Yeah, I remember that test. There have been a few of them throughout the years and the Mugen pretty much always came out on top.

I remember one test that had the J's whale pen!s almost as good as the Mugen and everyone rushed out to buy one. Then subsequent tests had the J's as being way over-hyped.

The Comptech Icebox was always the poor man's Mugen. That's not knocking the icebox, but it just wasn't quite as good.

I am not challenging your info, I am in complete agreement with you. I have read all those old threads "ad nauseam".

I want the old graphs back just so we can show the noobs and Mugen haters this for refrence. They either cant comprehend or dont believe the text.

Did you have issues with your js intake rubbing against the underside of the strut tower bar? My password jdm did that on my EM1 and it scuffed up the finish on the carbon fiber.
