Default '98 GS-R Transmission for my '94 LS

Should I do it?

Will the gear ratios cause my LS to shift out of power? Or are the gear ratios actually better for the LS?

Heres the shift points for an LS shifting at 6800 in an LS tranny and a GS-R tranny, provided my calculator is correct:

1-2 shifting to 4000 rpm @ 34.4 mph LS; 4000 rpm @ 33.4 mph GSR
2-3 shifting to 4540 rpm @ 58.5 mph LS; 4870 rpm @ 56.7 mph GSR
3-4 shifting to 5180 rpm @ 87.6 mph LS; 5170 rpm @ 79.3 mph GSR
4-5 shifting to 5030 rpm @ 115.1 mph LS; 5180 rpm @ 104.2 mph GSR

Both cars are hydro and it should be a direct swap. I would jump all over this one if you can. You could have the two trannies swaped in a day. More time if you decide to do the clutch and all while it's apart, no sense doing it twice.

I just got a new clutch and pressure plate, only about 50 miles on it.

Yup hopefully the seller follows through. He says no pop-outs or grinds. What if there are, what should I do?

Then wait for another trans, lol... Definitely pick up a gsr trans though, I did a few years ago. Still makes it fun to drive an ls. Plus I beat b18b's with b16 transmissions, so no excessively high cruising RPMs for no good reason.

If there's any problems with it after the purchase and install then get back to the seller about it. A bill of sale is always recommended.

What kind of information should be put on the bill of sale?
Seller Signature:
Acknowlegde of transfer:
Date:
Buyer Signature:
Miles:

Also, can't they use a fake name?

You want all that with his name in Fine Print so you can read it. It is always best to print out the ad for proof. Or even write down his address or license plate number. It might seem like alot to ask for, but the seller should have no problem with it unless his product is shitty. Better to play safe then be sorry Right?

Thanks for all the info.

The seller unfortunately is not responding. Eh...it was a good deal, too.

On the other hand, if the seller follows through. Is there a vin on the tranny that will prove it's a GSR?

the gsr tranny is definately an upgrade over the ls tranny you actually feel quite alot more of a difference with it compared any i/h/e setup. If you feel like taking it a step further the japanese gsr manual transmission can be found with a lsd.

someone correct me if I'm wrong but the 94-96 trannys don't come with a vin stamp but the 97-up does

And yes a gsr tranny has shorter gears but I always liked my ls tranny on my ls and the gsr tranny with the b18c.

Now if you had a gsr engine with an ls tranny I would say oh hell yes upgrade upgrade upgrade, you have so much lost power (been there done that) but for an ls, you're fine with what it has, there really isn't going to be a world of difference for all the time and money you're gonna be spending. Save yourself the headache haha

And your wallet will be a little heavier with all the gas money you'll be saving.

I don't know, but when I had the B20 and a GSR, it made the world of a difference. I probably said this a milloin times, but my teg, B20b, GSR tranny, basics, and street tires. 14.88.

I also heard that the b16 tranny has shorter gear ratios than the GSR. Yet you are 4k rpm on the freeway?

Anyways, I'm probably ending up with a LS trans because I found a great deal with warranty. $300, 1996.

P.S. since the trans is a '96, does that mean it is an OBD2?
I believe my motor is OBD1 being a '94 LS. The previous owner said he put a new LS motor in with 180K miles but he could've been lying. Is there a way to check what year it is? I heard on another thread there are numbers by the intake manifold in circles saying the year. More info on this plz.

if you want to check the year of the engine, the head will have a year stamp on the front near the header / exhaust manifold

Okay I checked it and the first numbers were (9/3). The rest didn't look like years unless this was a '09 lol.

Being that my car was manufactured in '93 for '94, then the motor must be a '94. Turns out the previous owner was trying to hustle me. I figured he was but I didn't care I wanted the car anyways.

Anyways I'm still getting a GSR trans. I found another seller.
