Default 5gen stereo upgrade

What's up, hey I want to upgrade my stereo, but I want to keep it factory. Has anybody done this? Do you know what radios swap into the 94-97 accords.
I searched the site but I can't find anyone doing this. I want to keep the stock look and dimmer function, but I want it to have some perks. You guys always have great ideas and good advice so thanks in advance.

I put this this in the stereo sec. but thought maybe you guys had some thoughts.

I want to "upgrade" the head unit to something from another Honda like the 98-00 accord unit but I don't want to buy something that definitely won't work.

The stock head unit is reallllly limited in terms of functionality. I'm not sure of any aftermarket options that are stock looking.

You may want to look at the JDM Gathers units, but I'm unsure how they'll work in the Accord.

I want the head to tie in with the dash mostly you know, dimmer control for long drives. I've gone down the after market road for a long time and have found that to beat stock head units you have to spend big money.

I think I just found an add on cd player that will go with my oem head, maybe this will work.

As far as i know almost all stock head units fit you just have to wire it up which is no big deal. but im almost certain that all the wiring and plugs for the head units from 1990- 1997 are all the same i could be wrong. Integra's came with CD players and no wiring is required. if you want almost the same color as your interior you are going to have to locate a factory acura CL CD player and that should fit no problem. based on experience i had the integra and the CL in my 5th gen and i didnt need to do any wiring.

The Acura CL CD player is no different than the 5th Gen Accords'.

I upgraded my tape deck to the 5th gen CD player and it did just fine with Sony Xplod speakers. They cannot do MP3 discs.

I've been looking at some 98-00 over-sized head units from accords/ others and they look like their the right size. I'll try to get to a junk yard to get my hands on one.
Thanks muffinman

anyone know the radio code for 94 accord tape deck?

Take the serial number off the deck and proof of ownership (car registration) to the Parts Dept at any Honda dealer. They can grab it for you in a second. It's free and if they try to charge it's for the removal of the radio (which you've already done)

Keep in mind that after 97 they changed the radio plug - I looked at doing the 98+ swap too. So you'll need to rewire.

No worries, like I mentioned though, if you're wanting a bit more *umph* the JDM Gathers units may work. But I myself haven't played with them. Some of them are crazy looking double DIN monsters.

alright, i looked through a couple of pages of search results and I have 2 Gathers head units but it seems this stuff is pretty rare, and I guess there's a question as to whether or not it will do American radio/CD's. What's your take on this muffin man?

Gathers CD units should work fine for American CDs. The radios, not so much. The frequencies are lower in Japan (76-90 MHz as opposed to the US's 87.5-107.9 MHz), so unless you like listening to NPR a lot, you'll probably not get much use out of the radio.

If your looking for the easiest route, go with the optional cd player that fits under the stock radio. (as long as your tape deck has the cd function)
I just got mine about a week ago and love it. It took about 10 min tops to put in - one cable that plugs right in, and its a factory unit so it matches perfectly.

nice. Decided to just go aftermarket, now I'm trying to sort out a bad ground loop, and some shut down pop!

hopefully I can get some belts changed this weekend.
