Default b16 transmission vs. b18 transmission

Ok. Before i get flamed, ive searched numerous times and havent really found my answer. That being said, here we go.

My ef has a b18a1 swap, with a b16 tranny. I fly through first, second, third, and the beginning of 4th gear. My buddy owns a 91 integra with a jdm b18b swap, and the ls transmission. I pull on him until about the middle of 4th and he starts to pass me back.

So my question is about the b16 tranny in general. Are the b16 transmissions geared differently to make them just fly through the low gears and start to slow down through 4th and 5th?? Compared to the ls transmission its like the b16 tranny kinda lacks top end power while the b18 transmission kind of makes up for itself in the top end. Does this make sense.

How would a b16 tranny with, say an ls 4th and 5th gear do?? Or would the synchros just not match up at all to make the shift from 3rd to 4th smoothly?? Cause i love the first three gears of my b16 transmission but i hate the top end. Any help is greatly appreciated

I think the top end of a b16 tranny is still lower geared then a ls transmission. the reason people change out gears in a b16, gsr, or a type r transmission to ls gears is to have a higher 5th gear so they can drive on the freeway and sustain a lower rpm then with a short geared transmission or to tweak their gear usage in the 1/4 mile to better suit their engine. The b18b is a more powerful engine then the b18a that may explain why he eventually pulls on you and could also be a difference in chassis.

exactly. If he's pulling on you with that transmission and engine, he's either making more power than you, is lighter weight than you, or both.

Alright, that makes sense. The integra i thought was a little heavier than my hatch so i figured that the weight difference would make up for it. His motor does make more power than mine. Thanks guys
