Its a 94 accord clutch and it has rust on some of the splines. The worst part is that it has black fuzzy stuff around it. Im trying to clean it up and see if I can save money by reusing it. The flywheel has rust on the teeth and it looks a little worn on some of them. I was losing 3 and 4th gear. Before this engine swap. I just want to know your opinion and see if I should save a few bucks for now or just replace it.

 

what do you mean by losing 3rd and 4th?

 

If by loosing 3rd & 4th you mean that the clutch was slipping then I would replace the clutch. Now if it was engaging and then grinding or poping out of gear you will probably have to replace the 3rd & 4th gear sets and/or syncro hub.

 

i would just replace the clutch and flywheel, it'll save you the headache of changing it later down the road

 

Ghost sounds right on to me (as usual.) By your description it sounds like you are in need of a new clutch and possibly flywheel also (although the flywheel may be able to be saved.

Just an afterthought while I was writing this, I'm not positive about this, but its probably not a good idea to take much material off of any spinning parts. They should probably be balanced pretty well. Someone else can probably be more sure about this (Ghost this is where you chime in.... lol )

 

Don't wory about the teeth on the flywheel having a little bit of rust on them. It's normal. That is where the starter drive sprocket contacts the flywheel and spins the engine. The rust won't hurt that a bit. As for some of the teeth being worn down, that is also normal. Post up pics and someone should be able to give you a better diagnosis.

Having your flywheel resurfaced is a good thing to do if you are planning to reuse it with a new clutch kit. As long as you take it to a reputable shop you shouldn't have any balance issues.
