Default 1997 honda civic misfire

b16 blah blah... im not big on these engines, or cars actually...(im a domestic guy but i am looking for some help..my dad bought this car not knowing that this misfire is an actual problem, he saw low miles and low price and bought it.) i know its got no cat and an aftermarket tune apparently to pass emissions and the after-cat o2 sensor is deleted.. did the whole tune up thing, whats next..? i brought it to a shop and the guy said its running lean, i asked him how does he know that...he said it was the last code that was pulled which was awhile ago, i doubt its running lean.. and if it is, would that cause a misfire?

it needs the o2 sensor to fix the lean issue

Is this an ex, lx, dx? engine is a?

What is a tune? im assuming your saying he paid someone to pass smog illegally. what is the actual code?

Theres too many reasons why a misfire can occur and running like crap. If your concerned about the car running properly, a start would be to put the original exhaust manifold/catalytic convertor combo on it to resolve the o2 sensor problem. If that in turn does not resolve the misfire problems, you can check the other possible problems like:

clogged exhaust system, low compression, vacuum leaks, etc. do a search, and you will find more places to look.

regardless of your great knowledge of domestic vehicles, if your missing an o2 sensor, whether it be an import or domestic, you will not pass smog. The ecu will be looking for it. and whether you own a domestic or import, the problems to check concerning misfires as listed above, applies to all vehicles.

have a nice day.

well what model is the car? what year? what engine? any check engine lights? Is it OBD1 or OBD2? We need more info to help you out. It can be a issue with the spark plugs, wires, ICM, ECU, O2 Sensor, etc.
