need HELP. asap. 2nd 4th reverse gone. well sometimes
so a couple weeks ago i decide to buy 94 civic ex. bubble. dont know nothing about honda's. anyway, kid tells me sometimes you need to double clutch to get reverse to grad... figured i can deal with that. dude said it would be a quick fix. adjustment my mechanic.
now 2 weeks later with 2 days of driving car since purchase, sometimes car drives fine, shifts smooth, no probs.
sometimes, 4th gear is lost. from 3rd to 4, seems like theres no 4. i double clutch and nothing, rev it up to try and get it in and dont work. sometimes it goes, EVENTUALLY. after problem usually goes away. then comes back whenever.
tonight i took car to mechanic to address other issues. that needed fixing.
told em about my clutch issues. adjusted clutch. and i left.
on my way home, 2nd became lost. forth continued to be lost. and found and lost...
pull into liquor store. NO reverse. had to push car up hill backwards. pissed off i drove off. no beer no ciggs. just madd as hell
pull out, no 2nd. or 4th.
whole way home same thing. get home no reverse. push car out of driveway to go get ciggs. eventually had 2nd 4th and reverse.
NEED TO KNOW WHATS CASUING THIS.
WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT IT WILL COST ME TO FIX
DO I NEED CLUTCH?
car has gsr trans with act 6 puck clutch.
a million thanks for any help here.

is it a hydro tranny? or cable? im not too familiar with civics, sounds like one of two things....
1. clutch cable (not likely), or a master cylinder/slave cylinder issue if you have a hydro transmission
2. (the worst of the two) a syncro issue (transmission rebuild)
if you do have a hydro tranny, a slave cylinder is like 20 bucks and a master cylinder is not much more and both are very easy to change

to be honest, i dont know hydro or cable.
i know its a gsr trans that works great when it wants to and at other times is a mess.
right now cars in driveway, with car off, i cant get any low gears. 24r
this was happening once in a while after id drive car a bit. now parked car yesterday after swapping out short shifter for stock and then getting new tires put on. car now sits in driveway with no reverse. so ill have to push it out and see what happens.
is it worth changing slave and master if problems might be syncros???
the thing i fear about buying a used trans, is not knowing if trans is good. word of mouth im sure will be trans is great, no grinds no pop outs. how will i know??
i dont wanna pay for another trans, pay for installation and poss end up with trans problems.
thats why im asking about prices on rebuild. maybe the only way of being sure the trans will be fixed and trouble free for a couple yrs.

easy way to find out if you have a hydro tranny:
look under your hood next to the brake master cylinder, if there are two master cylinders with resivoirs on them then you have a hydro trans.
if thats the case, 60 bucks and 2 hours of your time is very much worth it, even if you DO have to end up getting a rebuild.
expect to pay 1500 or more to get a manual gear box rebuilt and installed.

if so, maybe 400 plus 5 for labor??
dont know man. didnt expect to hear 1500 for rebuild.

labor to pull a trans out and re-install it is going to be around 400, not to mention the labor to rebuild. yes, rebuild kits are around 400 bucks.
$400 - rebuild kit
$400 - install labor
$500 - rebuild labor

dont quote these prices, all shops are different. maybe you can find someone who will give you a deal. good luck finding a shop that will use parts that you bought from somewhere else. most times they wont warranty the work if they are cool enough to use parts that you bought from another place.
my advice: do it yourself.... its really not that hard
