Default adjustable cam gears??

Hey guys.. i know i'm new here but i currently have a 92 civic hatchback with a 98 b18c1 swap in it. recently i messed the head up and i currently have everything taken apart. My question is since i have everything apart would it benefit from having the adjustable cam gears or are they pretty much all for show? The only thing really done to the car is i have a DC header with 2.5" custom exhaust and a cold air intake everything else is pretty much stock so would i even benefit from putting the cam gears on it?

Thanks in advance

am not 100% sure but i belive it wont make a really big diffrence it depends what brand you get them also if it's a cheap brand maybe 2 or 5 more hp...maybe... or expensive maybe a little more...you should invest in a vtec head though instead of that ls head....

it's your build though so you go for what you want...what would make a diffrence that you would probably feel would be camshafts...

huh?

he has a vtec head, its a gsr...

secondly, how do you reckon an expensive set of adjustable cam gears is going to net more hp than a cheap set of gears. they are both accomplishing the same thing just one looks prettier and might be built with better components.

for op's particular setup they are not needed. simple as that

i must have not read the part where it said he had a gsr head

ok so lets see you want to compare an ebay strut bar to a skunk 2 or other know/expensive brand?? lets see which one will be stiffer and more stable on turns??

what you just said could/will make a diffrence ''might be built with better components'' excatly something built with better and durable components will most likely last longer and serve a better purpose then the cheap one

i didnt say the cheaper one would last longer, i said it would not provide any more hp gain than a more expensive set of cam gears. specifically cam gears i'm talking about here. comparing cheap strut bars or turbos to expensive ones are in a different ballgame altogether.

Thanks alot for the help D16. I figured that it didnt matter what the name brand of the cam gears were the fact remains that they will still be doing the exact same thing no matter what they are. I was originally thinking of going with skunk just because i dont want to put "Bobs cam gears" on my car and have them break in 5k miles. Just 1 more question.. if i were to put them on what would i have to do to cut the valve cover i mean do i need to have that done at a shop or is it something i can do on my own?

There is no benefit of putting adjustable cam gears on stock cams. If Honda thought they could get more power by tweaking the cams a bit, it would have been done from the factory. Now with aftermarket cams it's a whole different story because those cams (depending on other modifications) could make more power if they are advanced/retarded.

if you have an appropriate cutting tool then go for it, otherwise you might want to have someone else try it. here's a little writeup someone did and they used a jigsaw to cut through the vc.

if you are racing and have a specific power range in mind, then adjustable cam gears help you put your power exactly where you want it. and you dont wanna go messin with that kinda stuff unless the car is on a dyno anyways.

if you have a street car with some mods.......dont waste your time or money.

spend your money on true bolt-ons....ones that dont have to be adjusted to give proper results........because if you dont know what it does or how it helps or how to adjust and why.....you dont need to be messing with it. there is the possibility of adjusting it too much and you run a valve through your piston.......BAD DAY.

you will get more power and use out of adjustable cam gears with aftermarket cams and dont jsut rule out the ls head. im going non vtec b20 with p75 s head and you can make alot of power out of them. anyone who is serious about power eliminates vtecs main purpose anyways. vtec killer cams eliminate it. the only disadvanage is its flow rates which arent THAT bad anyways but nothign a port and polish cant change.

Like other posters have said, aftermarket cam gears won't make any more power...aftermarket cams will. The gears simply let you dial in the cams so you can get more HP where you want it. Putting them on a stock cam is pointless.

i had said in my post what you would feel make more power is camshafts just like your saying....am not shittin on ls heads nothing i personally would go with a vtec head instead...never had a built ls head though so idk how much they push ...
