Default Wear on D-series '96 - '00 Steel Forks

Anyone expirenced any unusual wear on D-series 3/4 '96 - '00 Steel shift forks? I've taken apart 4 of these things, and every one has a worn out 3rd/4th shift fork, not bent or broken, just worn way past the service limit where it goes over the slider. I don't know if I just got 4 bad ones in a row or if it was common. Other 2 forks were always fine. I ended up welding on one and filing it flat to build it back up again because I couldn't seem to find a good used one anywhere.

Part of it is due to the slider design, part due to the driver.

Not everyone I've torn down is bad.

Thanks Aquafina. I have to say i'm a little surprised, The one '92 - '95 tranny I built had perfect shift forks in it, i'm not sure if it was low mileage or if the aluminum forks just didn't wear all that much.

I remember I checked with a feeler gauge between the fork and the slider. I can't remember for sure if I measured the fork thickness with a vernier scale or not. It wasn't something you had to measure, there was about a 1/16" of play, you could see where the slider cut deep into the fork.
