Adding Subs and Amp to stock System 02 Accord
Ok, I am debating my two options, either add subs to my existing stock system, or change head unit and start over. I have questions about both options. Is the stock system extenally amplified? Or is the amp inside the head unit? If I decide to keep stock radio, would you suggest getting signal by tapping into the factory speaker wire going to the rear speakers in the back deck? Is splitting the signal going to lower resistance, and damage the factory radio?
Second option, is replace head unit with aftermarket. My questions are, are the stock speakers 4 ohm? Are they externally amplified? I only ask because for now, I would like to keep and use the stock speakers for now, I already have an amp, subs, and box. Somewhere down the road, I would replace the stock speakers though for sure. Thanks for the help. I tried searching but couldnt come up with the right terminology to lead me to the info I need.

you can add a nice set of subs and amp to your factory system. It can sound great also.... belive it or nt if you use a good signal converter box (not one from wallmart) you will have a higher pre amp output than after market such as alpine. the highest pre amp voltage on aftermarket is eclipse ,they have 8v. s go to your local stereo shop and get one from them it should cost about $20. AAlso tap into the rear speaker leads never run more wire than needed
depends on how loud you listen to your music. either way, youre going to have to beef up your speakers. this could be done with a head unit or components, or both. you dont have to spend a lot of money if you are not gonna blast it all the time.
Yea, I should have mentioned, I'm not lookin to roll my windows down and blast the neighborhood. I have listened to my music as loud as I normally would and the mids/highs sound great, it would just be nice to ad a little rear fill. I'll give it a shot and see what's up. Thanks for some of the answers.
1 big question still... If I swap head unit, and all speakers, will I need to completely rewire the car? And by that I mean, run all new speaker wire from the bak of the head unit to all speakers, or just use stock stuff. Is the stock system externally amplified, or is it all powered by the head unit?

No you don't have to rewire all speaker wires. You use your existing factory wires. Just have to cut the factory speaker wire and solder it with your new speaker wires and speakers..

I would recommend replacing the stock hu with either a clarion or alpine unit before you do the speakers. If you listen to your music loud enough to overdrive the hu, you will also need an amp for the speakers.
Replace the stock HU first, [single best improvement to your audio system you can make]
You will be very surprised how good your stock speakers can sound when they have a little more power driving them.
Use this kit...http://documents.victorytechnologies...roduct/927.pdf and the Metra 70-1721 wiring harness adapter
For best SQ out of HU do not use the stock radio harness 12V constant, run a fused 12ga power lead from batt, to behind HU and connect HUs 12V constant, [yellow] to it, a 12ga ground strap should be run from the HUs chassis to the cars chassis also. 94
