i'm new to this
basically, i've never worked on cars before. just got the hatch today. its making this noise when i go over eighty. the guy i bought it from sd something about the serpentine belt. Where is it?
a timing belt and serpentine belt are two totally different things.. serpentine belts run accessories like the alternator, ac compressor, power steering etc.. but our cars have individual belts for these accesories.. But you would have to be more specific to what kind of noise its making.. Just a noise is two vague.. like a bang? whine? squeal? grind? ya know..

I don't know about your noise but if he said something is wrong with the timing belt you want to look at it before it breaks. It will do a lot of damage to your engine if it's running and breaks. It's very simple you just look it over and make sure there are no cracks or tears, if there is you replace it. You will have to remove the cover to get a look on it.
You didn't say the kind of engine you have but I found a pic online that might help.

The timing belt is under the round cover that's on the right side of the engine if you were facing it. It is tricky to get the cover off because of other parts in the way- mine is set up the same, it take a lot of wiggling and twisting to get it loose but it can be done. I took off the valve cover and that made it a lot easier.
Typically you're suppose to change it every 90,000 miles I think, if you have a new engine with only 35k though you probably shouldn't need to change it unless something happened to it.

redharlem- your an idiot! its all about what the OP wants. if he/she wants performance then let them....don't discourage their choice.
thequiet- i'm pretty sure its also the timing belt...i dont think its quite worn out but i think its going slowly. lol it only whines at around 3k rpm in 5th. so....yeah. lol

check to see if its to tight..check all your belts while your at it it..and look under the car to see what you exhaust looks like it sounds like you dont have a catilytic converter..your numbers are bad as were mine turns out i didnt even have a cat...just shitty exhaust well about 7 exhausts welded into one
does the whine get louder and softer like every half a second? And does it get louder the faster you go? Im thinking it may be a wheel bearing since your saying it does it while your moving.. If its the timing belt it should do it when your sitting still and rev the engine up..

if you think it might be wheel bearing jack up the car and grab the tire from the top and bottom and see if it moves. am i wrong or wouldnt you feel some vibration and or a slight grinding noise?
