Icon2 Fellow R owner's chime in....k20a or f20c

What do you guys think of either swap. Now i know most of you are diehard owner's and would rather not see anything other than the original C5 in a R but i dont have the option of having my original block or tranny. With that said what do you guys think of either swap? I've seen people do k20r's and i myself have done a k-swap on another member's Itr but i've never seen or heard of an f20c powered R.

What are the pro's and con's of both?

If it where me, I'd say J32. Cheaper and more powerful.

k20s have a larger afternarket for power mods ie cams, headers etc, k20 would cost less then f20 theres many reasons to choose the k20 over the f20

people the f20 to say they have a f20, if you really want power and performance get the k20

Depends what you are after.

You can run a bone stock K24A1 block/head w/ cams, RBC, header, K20 TB, KPRO and make over 200whp (yes, thats right, no K20 head). The engine will lump like TODA VTEC killers.

K24A1 engine = $550 shipped
RBC manifold = $150
KPRO = $800
Chinese Header = $300
K20 TB = $125
Si Tranny w/ LSD = $1000 shipped
Cams = $400
K20 Oil Pump = $125
Total = $3450

Mounts = $400
PnP harness = $300
Axles = $400
Shifter box + cables = $300
Total = $1400

Total Swap Price = $4850

None of the above is "poor mans" setup. There are a few drag teams that believe using the K24A1 head as opposed to the K20 head due to its flow design. This motor setup listed above will rock your world.

There is more R&D with K's than there are J's at this point. You can actually close your hood with a K as well.

F20C is a very expensive platform. There are not too many people running that, actually, I cant even name one person doing F20C setup. IMO, its not worth doing the F20C because the K platform is already dominate with large amounts of WHP/TQ.

I agree with Migs. Between the two choices, the K series is a better route.

you know what I am after, keeping it simple. Close to stock and reliable. Heres a vid posted by Wolydotmatrix as an example.

No need to go threw all that building you mentioned, move one mount, wire it up and go.

Personally, if I had a complete R, minus motor/tranny, I'd either put a K24 in it or I'd get a B18, build it for boost and turbocharge it.

Or, I'd look for JDM B18C5 complete motor/trannys.

I don't like the idea of a motor swap that causes compromises and engineering issues, such as the F and the J swaps.

Honestly, you'll probably be much happier if you keep it simple.

I forget that you are from the midwest and enjoy an engine sticking out of your hood, or no hood at all for that matter.

Breaking out a grinding wheel is still easier than the build plan you listed. It yeilds more power, more reliabilty, less effort. You cant blame the J.

How would you even make the F20 work in a FWD car?

I like the J32, plenty of power, plus sleeper status.

I was searching for that too and came up with copious flywheel weight data. I do recall a b-series thread in the all motor forum that had the engine weight.

I believe AndyJT said it was about 200lbs heavier compared to the B18C5, so the diff is pretty marginal. Nothing a heavier spring up front couldnt handle. I can pm you a link from a diff site if you'd like to see more on it.

Honestly, I'd call 200lbs extra substantial (especially because of where the extra weight is added). I don't care how you spring it, you're going to have understeer way before a B-series equipped car.

If it is a drag car, then fine. But a car that'll see autox and track events, no thanks.
