Does this work?
yah it "works"... but that depends on what you expect from the change.
I tried different settings on mine a little last month to try removing a dip in my power band at vtec. I am running a stock GSR motor, JUN ecu, aem cai, spoon header, testpipe, 2.5" piping and N1 muffler. With a little advance on the intake cam the car now pulls harder and much smoother. Now when I am cornering while vtec kicks in the car is much more stable.

the risk of playting with your timing is detonation aka pinging.
when your motor ignites the air/fuel mixture before it should, because of temps and timing settings.
if you dont have a noisy exhaust you can usually hear pinging as a fluttery piece of metal sound... like what you might think a throttle body plate would sound like if it was bouncing open and closed a thousand time a mintue.
the article you linked to explains how you want to remain WITHIN +/- 2 degrees of your stock settings to avoid detonation/pinging.
detonation/pinging is a surefire way to eat up your headgasket with extreme temperatures and cause a major problem when the headgasket fails.
