ULTRALIGHT FLYWHEEL.....YES OR NO?
Ive got a 2000 civic DX. In the near future I will be installing a y8 head and TB along with a p28 (still debating whether chipped or not). I've heard mixed review about a lightened flywheel. Any stories, recommendations.....? Has anyone really tried a 1/4 mile run of before and after a flywheel replacement. I guess imjust trying to figure out if it is really worth it. Thanks in advance.
lightened flywheels dont do anything....if your just gonna have the stock motor then if anything a lightened flywheel is gonna hurt you...dont waste your time

Lightened flywheels are great. The lighter the better. It can be easy for RPM's to drop off though but you just have to learn to adjust your driving.
I liked my light flywheel I put on my old D16Z6. Since it made its power in the upper RPM range the flywheel let the engine spin up quicker. I didn't have to worry about the torque loss of the lighter flywheel because the D16Z6 doesn't have any anyways.
I put a light flywheel on my LS and I like the LS better with the OEM flywheel. I could tell the torque loss on the low end.
Like Koopa said the RPMs will tend to back off a bit quicker but the only time it bothered me was when the A/C was on. If the A/C wasn't on it was fine.
On that SOHC engine, I say go for it.

im not saying lightened flywheels are useless...obviously they do a great deal of defference, i work on this **** all the time, but on a bonestock d16.. the point of a lightened flywheel is to have less inertia to rev and high revs feel more stronger, but if your notmaking power it can only hurt you if you only have a stock single cam cuz your gonna lose the torque that you need to keep that inertia of the small motor to push that heavy car at low end....
maybe a flywheel thats a couple lbs. lighter wont be that bad i guess but dont get that ultra light aluminum 7lbs. crap

i dont mean like exaggerating freakin power. But id tought it revved quicker therefore little bit more torque. Maybe its just me. Hey what do u think about b18b's? Over my gay d16? Look for my thread and let me know.
i got a 7 pound fidanza flywheel the day i switched to a manual.
it started out hard to keep it from stalling out, but after a month i was driving like a beast
one big thing about lightweight flywheels is how FAST the engine revs.
i can burn rubber through 1st
im pretty sure it degrades mpg though

Lightened Flywheel = Less Rotational Mass = More horsepower/Torque TO THE WHEELS (Doesn't actually GIVE you more, you just get more of it to the wheels).
-Engine Response Increases
-Car Accelerates and Decelerates Faster
-Far more effective Engine Braking
Its not useless. But from my understanding going TO LIGHT isn't a good thing either.

and to mortifcation i would go ls over b16 anyday with a vteck head pull just as hard as a gsr but with more torque. sorry to thread jack btw continue lol
I have a 7lb Fidanza on my D15B and I love it. I've had it since I got my car, so I've used it with boost, stock z6 and now this and I've never had a problem driving it.

With your idealogy, what's the point in doing anything to an engine then?
Are you talking about the chatter from a metallic clutch disk?
I have a 7.5lbs flywheel and it makes no noise whatsoever now have I ever heard of a flywheel making noise.

Wow... I've never seen so many people saying they do not help! Lightweight flywheels definately can help make torque, IF you have it to start with! Ask people that drive cars that actually have power in the first place... No your 50 ft/lb stock honda engine will not benifit, you prob will stall off the line if your not really careful. After you are moving however you will not see much of a difference unless you go up a steep hill or have accessories running, etc... Then it will bog down easier.

I have used lightweight flywheels on at least 8 cars i've had over the years both stock and modified.....they do help acceleration, without a doubt. It's a wonderful upgrade!
This is BS, a lighter flywheel makes a difference even on a stock engine!

I had the 7lb Fidanza on my d16y8 (in fact, it's still on that engine in another car now). I can't actually point to dyno proof that it frees up power, but IMO it definitely improves the feel and fun factor of the car.
Personally, I don't think it makes it any faster, but it makes it *feel* like it pulls harder.
Any recommendations on brand? I plan on buying parts little by little, than slapping everything on at one time. The basics for now will be a y8 head, p28 (possibly chipped), maybe a mild cam and gear, with the head ported and polished. If I can save some more $, thinking about doing a full valve job on the y8 head. Once this is done than I will install the flywheel with a new clutch of course.
There are many good brands out there. Imo, for the money ACT makes a very good line with a couple of different weight options for each series of engine.
My latest flywheel upgrade is to a B18C5 with ACT Prolite at 8.8 lbs Another couple months once spring arrives, my EM1 will have more new found power
