What is your budget and what are your plans for the motor?

When you talk about taking an H23 and making it a 2.5L. What do you consider very little work? A stroker kit and sleeves is about as much work as one can do to a block. $$$$

ok so save your money & rebuild the F22 for boost. You don't need DOHC VTEC or iVTEC for that. Plus the H23 is only 2.3L, not sure where your buddy is getting his info. Do some research into boosted F series engines. There are more than a couple making 300+ whp. without spending $600+ for a uesd block to start.

^x2. You could even get a f22 for a couple hundred, have it built, and get every part you need for boost so you can do it all in a weekend. All for less than $6,000.

Tear it down and have it checked out. ie, have it cleaned up and inspected. Then check/replace the oil pump, water pump, tensioner and any other seals. Remove the balance shafts if you want. There is a cheap DIY on how to do a balance shaft delete on here somewhere.

Then go from the top down. turbo cam, springs if required???? Low compression pistons & rods. Then start putting together a turbo kit......That is something that someone else will have to fill you in on.....I'm not a boost guru. If I was to build one that is what I would do. Done right you will have a freshly built block for what you were goign to spend on a used engine and some parts.

I would say to go ahead and do valves, springs, and retainers. Might as well, and it won't throw you over budget. Turbo parts needed are Turbo, blow-off valve, wastegate, intercooler and piping, turbo manifold, oil lines, bigger injectors(550cc or higher), upgraded fuel pump, new exhaust system(at least 2.5", preferably 3"), boost gauge, oil pressure gauge, fuel pressure gauge(optional, but recommended), and get your ecu dyno tuned.

You can also get a turbo timer. It can help to extend the life of your turbo.

You will also need a clutch/pressure plate combo to handle the power. If you want to get a lightened flywheel, get a chromoly one that is no less than 11 lbs.

And DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT buy a ebay turbo kit. The seals on the turbo start to leak around 10 lbs. You can however save a bit by buying the intercooler, BOV, and wastegate from there.

The swap threads are always humorous.

just friggin boost it. or actually spend close to 10k on everything for a k, just to say hey, i dont have that much more power than i started with but i am so cool cause i have a k.

boost it. over twice the horsepower with a little over a grand. yeah. im sold.

Get yourself an EX trim ECU
H23 IM and TB
F22A6 Cam

As stated above tear the engine down and check internals and then of course rebuild for boost!!!

Boosted F! FTW!!!
Just my 2 cents

What was the state of that engine and what were the conditions that it was enduring to cause this catastrophic failure?

68k miles when it blew up. Had a slight rod knock when i bought it. Over the next 3 years, it progressively got worse until i said **** it, stopped changing the oil, and beat the living **** out of it for 2 months. Then, kaboom!

This is one of the strongest built SOHC engines.

BTW, It still ran with that huge *** hole in the block believe it or not. It didn't run good, but it ran.

I caused the failure, but i can say that it was one strong engine.

Ok now I see - the picture painted a totally different story to me. I thought you were saying that the F23 were junk.... Misinterpretation!
