Default Turbo and Trannies

what kind of disadvantages are there using a b16 hydro tranny on a turbo set up??how much will using a gsr or ls tranny help out? does using a gsr or ls tranny shave a lot of time of the 1/4????is there a huge advantage from using a ls or gsr tranny? or is like you finish the 1/4 in 5th gear with a b16 or sumthin like that. thanks for all the info

the B16 tranny just has tighter gears then the LS and GSR tranny's. You'll rev higher when shifting. People like the LS because you have a longer powerband to rev up on with a turbo strapped on.

I've got a GSR tranny on my LS turbo. I like it because I don't have to wait to produce full power. When I shift into the next gear, I'm already up in almost full power. The b16 tranny is even worse.

wrose?
theoretically yoll run the fastest 1/4 with the b16 tranny but that all depends on traction and with the b16 tranny its the hardest one to obatain traction

there is a point where the gears become TOO short for the strip (like Type R and jdm b16 trannys, your gonna be getting almost into 5th gear if your making a 13 second pass)

the b16 tranny is gonna make traction a BITCH if you are running a fair amount of boost

Im currently trying to decide the best transmission route also

Jinxproof = 10.70@134mph with a B16 trans.

Nuff said.

(It all comes down to slick/tire size and when you're shifting. Creates a ratio. Read up)

You also have to decide whether you like cruising @ 5K rpm @ 80mph as you will with the shorter geared trannies.

He also rides on slicks making over 500whp in a car that weighs ~2400lbs with him in it. Hurts on street tires cause traction.

it wont be bad for daily driving, there are thousands of stock si's with the shorter geared tranny.(granted they dont have turbo's)
if you get on it.(with turbo).whether you have an ls or b16 tranny.dont let anyone fool you , because of our fwd drive you WILL Have major wheel spin with EITHER tranny!
4th gear in a b16 goes to about 114 MPH and slightly higher in a type R .

what gear you finish in is mainly decided by slick size and gearing. You can make a civic si finish in 5th bone stock...just use small slicks.

A Type R or b16 tranny are both great for turbo. You just need to use taller slicks then with a ls tranny.

sorry to bring this back up from the dead, but, i have a boosted b16 using the b16 tranny and Im kinda getting tired of highway cruising 65mph at 4000rpms! But, i like the way how the short gears work, makes for great top speed mph at the 1/4 mile.

So, go back to the question at hand, what would be best for a mainly street driven boosted 1.6? LS tranny or B16 tranny?

if traction is not a problem and everything else is cool, there is no need to swap trannys. just swap in a ls 5th gear for low rpm highway driving.

replace final drive with lower ratio. like a 4.2:1. You are not changing gear ratios but your changing the speed at the same rpm.

b16 tranny with a quaiffe is the best bang for the buck setup.....nuff said....it has been proven time and time again.....shorter gears=faster times

Final drive is part of the gear ratio equation...

I sit corrected. The FD is part of the gear ratio. Changing it will affect speed. with the 4.2, the speed will be higher at the same RPM. But the shift and drop points are not affected. Shift it at a certain rpm and it will drop at the same rpm. You need more torque for the lower geared fd though.

So, what is the best combo gear ratio for the street and also for the strip. I think someone here have:
1st gear= gsr
2nd gear= gsr
3rd gear= SI
4th gear= SI
5th gear= LS
Final Drive is 4.4 or 4.7
I'm not quite sure though

trying this for the first time, if I have my gears right....
2nd 2.105
3rd 1.46
4th 1.107
5th .996
FD 4.4

And contrary to how it looks, flatter is a steeper gear

EDIT: why does that look wrong. 126mph @8k with 16's?
I used http://www.jadesupra.net/gears/index.html

It does'nt look right. Specially in 5th gear, it should be atleast 150mph but what do I know. Here's the correct gear ratios.
1st gear=3.230
2nd gear=1.900
3rd gear=1.458
4th gear= 1.107
5th gear= 0.714

what size tire did u put in? if u put in 245/50/16 then its right. are u gonna be running 245's on the car? or 25.5" slicks?

most hondas will run a 205/45/16 which would equal 114mph in 4th @ 8k.
