Raising Compression for better Throttle Response?

setup is a 81x89 ls/v
pr3 pistons
itr cams
etc etc!
I plan on doing alot of auto-x and hpde events this year instead of drag. I got a chance to drive my friends ls/v the other night and I was surprised at how much faster it felt than my car, when he is only making about 5-8 more whp than my car. After giving me some details on his setup it's the same setup as my car as far as bore and stroke, but he is running ctr pistons and pro2's and skunk2 flat face valves. Estimated compression is around 13:1 he said. Anyway the point i'm trying to get at is his cars throttle response was damn near instant and while my car does pull, his power just seems more on tap and it's just there when you lay into it. I would like to raise my compression as well for sheer throttle response, I don't care about power output as this motor isn't intended for straight line purposes. Could I run ITR cams with that much compression, or would I need bigger cams? If so what are smallest cams I could get away with using?

That's because the Pro 2's have much larger than stock primary lobes which is what you operate on before VTEC, making a lot more power "under the curve" and before VTEC.

ok thanks for that info, would more compression cause that as well? Could I even run pro2's with just pr3 pistons?
More compression on ITR cams would give a very slight lift in power but nothing equal to the power gain of installing pro 2's. Pro 2's will work in many builds and work best in the ones with good supporting mods. You could always try them and find out for yourself. If you don't like them, you can always sell them easily as people are always looking for some.
