need help timing my car
ok so i figured when i did my head that i could get by with just adjusting the new head cam in the same position as the old head when i took it off. i did mark the timing belt when i took the old one off..anyways while i was trying to take the cam gear off when the new head was on the car it moved a little bit. now im wondering if that would have messed up my timing at all. the new head is on the car with a few head studs holding it on but i was wondering if it woulda made the timing jump off at all.can i just take the new head off and adjust it like i did the first time? my friend told me it would have made my pistons move and he said it messed up the timing...i know ur prolly not understanding what im trying to type so if all else fails does someone have a walk through on timing?
i did search and couldnt find anything. thanks in advance

Pistons have to be at TDC. Cyl 1 and 4 at the highest point of stroke then the Cam gear must be at tdc marks and.....

yeah somewhat. just answer this for me man. i spun the cam gear with no timing belt on it and no spark plugs in it. would that have made the pistons move at all? if not i can set it back to where the old head cam gear was and just put it back like that with out retiming the whole thing.
im sorry to ask abunch of stupid questions

It isn't the questions that are stupid, it's the ignoring of the responses. Basically the method that you're proposing is a terrible idea.
There are marks on the crank pulley that must be lined up and marks on the cam gear that must be lined up. Once you've taken the 30 seconds it takes to properly align the crank and camshaft, you need to slip on your timing belt without moving anything. If you think you've got everything together alright, turn it by hand a couple of rotations to see if the crank pulley and cam gear still both line up properly. If they do, your timing is set and you can worry about the rest of the job.

i just called me friend and he said i can spin it back around and then put the belt on and he said it will be fine. he said it couldnt have made the pistons move any because it had no compression. is it this easy? ha like i said im sorry for asking these questions but i just want to be safe.
I realize that this isn't the same engine that you have but setting the timing should be the same.

The FAQ sections found at the top of the 88-91 and the 92-00 boards can be really helpful with common problems. You have to figure that if you're having an issue, someone else has probably had the same one.
