Default accord speedo issue

whats up guys. my friend has a 02 accord lx 4 door. with that info you should know this is a vtec engine and a 5 spd trans. what my issue is, the vss was facked up and the speedo wont work. i just replaced the vss with a new one, and took the car for a test ride.....no cigar. the speedo still isnt working. i removed the pos. terminal on the battery for about 15 min and let the car sit. once again took it for a spin, and once again no go. NOW i ran the car, and took the fuse out for the gauge cluster. the lights went out on it, and put it back in, the fuel and gasi think) both went back up to their normal levels prior to me removing the fuse. took it for a spin AGAIN and STILL no cigar. what could it be? all fuses are good.

any ideas?

The speedometer itself could be bad. It's a common problem for 5th gens but Idk bout 6th gens

So would I have to go into the cluster and replace the speedo unit?

Did you get a CEL with a VSS code? If not, then your VSS most likely was fine.

You can reference the 5th gen information by searching. The short answer is yes, you replace the speedo unit.

I had a broken VSS on 99 Accord 5speed but it did set the check engine light and and VSS code. The sesor had a broken pin and the connector had corroded pins. I had to buy both.

Make sure you get the right voltage to the VSS first. After I replaced the sensor and a piece of wire with the connector everything instantly went back to normal.
